Facilities Services is comprised of seven separate units which include: the Director's Office, Business and Information Services, Campus Facilities Services, Custodial Services, Grounds/Recycling, Engineering/Utilities and Support Services. Facilities Services’ mission is to continuously improve facility services for the campus community in partnership with clients and staff. This position will only work on the UC Berkeley Campus and immediate area.
We are currently hiring for 2 positions: Monday - Friday; 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Monday - Friday; 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM - This position will receive a shift differential based on the swing shift hours.
Perform elevator mechanic duties in the construction, maintenance and alteration or repair of building elevators, dumbwaiters, conveyors and moving stages. Install, replace, repair, and maintain electrical motors, wiring controls, alarms, lighting, mechanical and hydraulic mechanisms and devices typical of elevators and other type lifts. Support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others. Prepare isometric drawings in detail showing measurements and materials with information obtained from blueprints and verbal instructions. Perform complex electrical hydraulic and mechanical troubleshooting. Wire panels, switches, control boards, electronic circuit boards, motors, pumps and other mechanisms. Troubleshoot complex computer control devices and software control operating programs. Select correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific elevator projects by applying working knowledge of codes and the skills of a craftsperson. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent.
Adherence to the scheduling of work through the work management program is required. Consult shop superintendent and/or lead for technical information. Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Define and describe materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods and task sequences. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent. Obtain materials and equipment as required.
Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines. Attend job-related and safety training as required.• Must possess certification as an Elevator Mechanic in the State of California. • Must have completed a five year elevator mechanic or electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent. • Must have at least three years journeyman experience in a comparable position or related experience in a university, hospital or large building complex. • Education and training can be through documented experience and/or professional development through an accredited college or university. • Demonstrated working knowledge of local, state, building and uniform fire, mechanical, electrical and elevator codes and standards. • Must be able to interpret complicated circuitry designs and have a good understanding of electronic devices such as relays and controllers. • Must be able to work in confined spaces. • Must be able to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation. • Employee must possess a valid California driver’s license. • Pre-employment medical physical may be required. • Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, weekend on-call, watch, rotating swing shift and holidays. • Ability to prepare isometric drawings in detail showing measurements and materials with information obtained from blueprints and verbal instructions. • Must be able to read and interpret information from equipment manufacturers’ manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices. • Ability to climb 10 flights of stairs with a minimum amount of tools to repair elevators and to rescue trapped passengers with or without reasonable accommodation. • Ability to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation. • Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi- cultural environment. • Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others. • Must possess knowledge and ability to utilize correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific elevator mechanic projects by applying thorough knowledge of skilled trades. • Knowledge of and ability to conform to Facilities Services, University, state, and federal policies and procedures including safety policies such as the IIPP, Hazardous Materials Communications Program, Health and Safety Manual. • Ability to work with a fitted work respirator as required. • Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations. • Ability to distinguish colors and use of color codes effectively. • Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio. • Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner. This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Skilled Crafts Unit (KB) between the University of California and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council (ACBCTC).
