As part of the team, you will creates original, accurate, timely, informative, and compelling content for JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section in print and online.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
Creating original accurate, timely, informative, and compelling content for JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section in print and online through original reporting and investigation, nurturing of relationships with individuals and organizational sources, in-person or online coverage of medical conferences or press briefings, creative use of social media, staying abreast of and responding to developments and current events in medical science and health policy, data mining public health datasets, and any other creative approach to prospecting and executing relevant story ideas.
Suggesting appropriate illustrations (such as photos, art, charts, and/or graphs) for articles and the news blog(s) and works with outside sources and JAMA’s editorial graphics department to obtain or develop such images. Suggesting and contributing to the creation of enhancements (electronic interactive, multimedia) to enrich news content online.
Using general knowledge of biomedical science and of key persons in research, practice, and policy to help other writers develop story ideas and to help plan the overall content of the Medical News & Perspectives section in print and online.
Bachelor’s degree essential, with an advanced degree in journalism and/or biological/biomedical science/clinical research highly desired.
Broad knowledge of medicine and biomedical science (e.g., genetics, immunology, cancer biology), and clinical research necessary, with ability to read and understand published research and ability to search and synthesize information from public medical research databases (i.e. pubmed) highly desired
Experience with developing and pitching news and feature story ideas, interviewing sources, and gathering and synthesizing originally reported material.
Excellent scientific writing ability a prerequisite with demonstrated skill in organizing and presenting scientific and health policy information as news and feature stories.
Three plus years’ experience with a news, scientific or medical print publication a plus.
Experience working with WordPress, digital and multimedia tools and ability to learn new digital and multimedia software and tools to keep pace with emerging technologies, knowledge of Microsoft Word and familiarity with the Windows environment necessary.
Ability to travel occasionally (e.g., to biomedical meetings or institutions) required.
Ability to work well on multiple assignments, independently or with other staff members on deadline and with minimal supervision, required.
Maturity, judgment, and personal presence to deal effectively with physicians and other scientists and federal government agencies essential.
Close attention to accuracy and detail essential.
Interpersonal skills to cooperate with editor, staff, and other personnel at JAMA and the AMA a must.
Must have published News and feature articles and demonstrated reporting experience
