The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has an opening for the position of government relations manager. The government relations manager is responsible for assisting the director of government relations advance NACAC’s state and federal legislative agenda, assisting with committee and member services and government relations-related communications to NACAC members, policy makers and other key constituencies.
NACAC is an education association of more than 16,000 postsecondary and secondary schools, organizations, counselors, and college admission and financial aid officers that work with students as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education. Assist with maintenance of budget records, ordering, and invoice processing.
Create messages in Knowlegis (electronic advocacy manager) to Members of Congress and related committees.
Manage online Legislative Action Center, including key votes, current legislation, and notes on Congressional members.
Draft and manage action alerts on federal and state issues.
Assist with general administrative tasks and other tasks as assigned.
Association Events, Committees, and Member Services
Help organize and plan the annual Legislative Conference, including preparing legislative packets, identifying/inviting speakers and other related actions.
Help draft and prepare handouts for Legislative Conference.
Assist with presentations and managing sessions of the March Legislative Conference.
Represent NACAC in meetings with Congress, the Administration and other federal agencies.
Prepare and disseminate materials to Government Relations Committee (GRC).
Draft minutes and provide general follow up for committee meetings.
Process requests for information from association members regarding government relations information.
Analyze and summarize federal bills that amend the Higher Education Act and Elementary and Secondary Education Act to determine relevance to NACAC's college access agenda, student protection agenda and related issues.
Analyze, summarize and disseminate state bills that relate to our legislative priorities to the appropriate affiliate GRC Chair and, if appropriate, work with the director of government relations and the affiliate GRC Chair to develop and implement a strategy for engaging relevant state officials.
Collect, analyze, and prepare data and other information to inform policy discussions and priorities.
Represent the association at meetings of other associations and coalitions related to public policy.
Implement communications to federal and state legislatures, including letters and broadcast emails.
Route relevant policy information to NACAC members and staff.
Help draft and/or maintain policy updates and other issue papers.
Register and serve as a lobbyist on behalf of NACAC, if requested.
Communication to Members
Draft news articles for bulletin and other NACAC communication tools.
Maintain and update legislative pages.
Blog about policy issues and events.
Draft and update fact sheets and policy briefs.
Bachelor’s degree in political science, education or related field required.
0-2 years of experience with college counseling, college admissions and/or state/federal government.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of federal/state government operations
Excellent communications skills
Good organization skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including the ability to conduct mail merges between data base/spreadsheet and word processing software
Ability to navigate Internet and use web-based programs.
