This is a professional/managerial position in the Professional Development and Resources department, reporting to the Managing Director, Professional Development & Resources in which the incumbent is responsible for directing the Institute's initiatives in the continuing education system. The Director serves as a leader of this business unit and a resource to members, components, AIA National staff, state licensing boards, and allied organizations on continuing education issues relative to the AIA CES programs. This role has management oversight of all aspects of the CES programs including its technical requirements, business planning and relationships between members, components, and continuing education system policy and procedures and management of all financial reporting and meeting revenue generation targets. The incumbent is responsible for the overall management of continuing education system, its technical interface with AIA Membership database, customer service and provider resources. In addition, the incumbent manages the work of the continuing education system team including program review, member and provider audits for compliance with AIA requirements, and maintenance of the transcript program for member and non-members.
Develops the business strategy and promotes, coordinates, and improves the AIA’s continuing education system policies, programs, services and standards in collaboration with AIA National staff and its volunteer committee.
Manages program business plan and financials including budget, revenue targets, annual invoicing of providers and development of provider resources and guidance to support quality programs.
Oversight of the development, management, coordination, marketing, evaluation and implementation of the AIA/CES programs and services.
Manage the operations and work of the continuing education staff, including program reviews, provider training, member and provider audits and data quality and management.
Implements quality assurance improvements as they are established.
Improves quality of program providers and their courses while maintaining revenue levels to sustain program
Guidance and support to AIA/CES Providers on continuing education trends, content development, program administration, and delivery to ensure compliance with program requirements.
Improve the process for course reviews and provider audits to meet quality assurance standards.
Professional Continuing Education for Architects
Assesses members’ professional learning needs and interests and advises the education providers to identify programs that fill needs.
Be familiar and stay current on NCARB and State Licensing Board continuing Education Requirements.
Handles technology and data issues through the team relative to AIA member’s transcripts and nonmember transcript subscribers.
Familiar with Learning Management Systems and data analysis.
Evaluates program quality and monitors the effectiveness and appropriateness of program offerings and proper reporting of attendance by providers.
Assures quality and accuracy of AIA’s continuing education record keeping system.
Interfaces with appropriate government, non-profit and business committees, councils, members and organizations to establish program and service priorities and to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of learning opportunities for members.

Demonstrated experience in the management of continuing professional education programs, including strategic business planning, comprehensive needs assessment, program design/development, program delivery, technology and evaluation. Considerable knowledge of and skill in defining and designing projects, monitoring costs, quality and on-time performance of project activities using standard project management techniques. Skill in facilitation, team building, collaborative problem solving, conflict resolution, and systems/process development. Skill in contracting with educational vendors and consultants and managing projects to successful completion and in evaluating vendor, provider, or consultant-provided educational products/projects, negotiating and managing service agreements of vendors and consultants. Skill in negotiation and active listening. Demonstrated skill in developing and monitoring revenue/expense budgets to achieve fiscal performance goals. Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and responsibilities. Ability to coordinate a diverse resource pool, to interact effectively in an individual membership environment, recognize and identify member concerns, analyze issues and concepts to correctly state a problem and develop recommended solutions. Experience and skill in writing/editing and public speaking. Ability to mentor and manage direct reports. Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook and ability to learn new programs and software.
Bachelor’s Degree in Education Psychology, Social Sciences, Architecture, Business or related field plus eight to ten years of professional experience in education and/or professional training. Advanced degree desirable. Knowledge of the architectural and/or design industry and in a membership organization and working with volunteers is a plus. Staff supervisory experience required. Occasional travel required.
