Medical Technologist / Technician - Blood Bank-17007072
Thank you for your interest in our Medical Technologist position. This position is a PRN position. Availability required for this position is primarily to cover 2nd and 3rd shift. The frequency is variable; availability to work on short notice is required.
Works under the supervision of the Manager of Laboratory Services and/or the Microbiology Manager. Performs and interprets designated test procedures in the Rapid Response Laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology as trained. Responsible for adhering to regulations as issued by CAP, AABB, FDA, OSHA and any other applicable regulatory agencies. Performs a variety of laboratory duties following established procedures, protocols and guidelines of the department and/or organization. Performs quality control, trains new employees, adheres to hospital policies, takes part in continuing education and maintains positive interpersonal relationships. Performs other duties as assigned.
Perform all designated procedures competently, including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Specimen Processing, Blood Bank, and Microbiology when designated
Set up and perform a variety of technical and complex tests following established procedures.
Recognize and solve problems or determine alternative solutions for analysis if needed and report all deviations from established procedures to the Manager or appropriate Supervisor.
Interpret, correlate and report test results. Verify computer-generated reports. Investigate erroneous test values and informs Supervisor(s) of all irregularities, errors or instrument failures and measures taken to solve.
Perform and document quality control and quality assurance. Document all quality control failures and corrective action taken.
Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration and make minor repairs to instrumentation. Notify Manager or Supervisor of any major instrument problems, efforts to correct and if any major repairs are needed.
Maintain accurate logs, records, files and all other required documentation.
Participate in updating and reviewing of procedures.
Keep assigned work areas clean and orderly and help to maintain supply inventory; use personal protective equipment appropriately and maintain a safe environment for patients and employees.
Train and orient new employees and students as requested. Complete training documentation as required.
Maintain a culture of service excellence.
Completes all assigned training within assigned timeframe; Classes, SOP review, E-Learning, etc.
Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our resources.
Manages work load effectively and efficiently and is able to prioritize workload to complete tasks in acceptable turnaround time. Able to perform several tasks simultaneously with no loss of quality.
Seeks additional assignments when volumes are low to ensure maximum effectiveness of department.
Monitoring supply quantities and restocking when volumes are low.
Perform other related job duties such as bone marrow collections, clerical tasks, sending specimens to reference laboratories, conducting verification tests on new products and instrument/procedure comparison, statistical analysis, quality audits, quality monitors and special projects

Medical Technologist (MT): Three years or more of academic studies at an accredited college. Completion of 12 consecutive months of internship in an accredited school of medical technology leading to a Bachelor's degree or work experience in a laboratory which qualifies for examination of a national registry Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): High school diploma plus two years training from an accredited program. Completion of an internship through an accredited school or work experience in a laboratory which qualifies for examination of a national registry
Note: In regards to MLT, per CLIA, Military programs can allow a person to obtain their MLT without having an Associate Degree.

Licensure, Certification or Registration
Medical Technologist (MT): National Medical Technologist registration by ASCP, AMT or equivalent registry eligible. Initial exam must be taken within 6 months of hire and successfully completed within one year. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): National MLT registration by ASCP, AMT or Associates Degree or equivalent registry eligible. Initial exam must be taken within 6 months of hire and successfully completed within one year.
