Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy (DOE) funded national laboratory, affiliated with Iowa State University, is seeking candidates for the position of Senior Theoretical Physicist within the Division of Materials Science and Engineering(DMSE) .
Within the Division of Materials Science and Engineering, this position is responsible for independently developing, establishing, organizing, and directing internationally recognized research programs in the area of quantum spin dynamics and control, quantum materials, quantum sensing and information in the fields of theoretical and experimental Condensed Matter Physics. The candidate is expected to conceive, propose, organize teams, set research directions and defend a diverse set of research programs under the above-mentioned topics. Along with scientific leadership, the duties of this position include building and maintaining strong collaborative efforts within DMSE, and with leading theoretical and experimental groups around the world. The position is responsible for maintaining the existing funding on DOE-sponsored research, as well as proposing and developing programs to attract new funding from DOE and from other funding agencies.
The incumbent provides scientific service to the funding agencies as a reviewer, and provides consultative advice to other scientists, organizations, and administrators. This position supervises the scientific personnel of the team (professional staff, postdoctoral associates and/or graduate students), and oversees and maintains the research facilities, ensuring that they are operated in strict accordance with federal, state and local environmental, safety and health policies.
Required: Ph.D. or other professional degree and 7 years of related experience. Degree must be in physics or related field. Strong publication record in the area of condensed matter physics, specifically in magnetism, quantum spin dynamics and control, quantum materials, quantum sensing and information. Successful track record in writing proposals for research funding. Demonstrated national/international standing within the discipline by the scientific community.
Preferred: Research experience at a national laboratory, major research university or industry in the area of quantum spin dynamics and control, quantum materials, quantum sensing and information. International scientific reputation and scientific leadership in developing and defending multidisciplinary scientific programs. Demonstrated experience developing independent research programs. Experience supervising scientific staff. Demonstrated leadership of multi-PI research programs.
