Research Assistant III - VUMC
This is an opportunity for highly qualified individual to join a highly productive academic laboratory team focused on the biology, prevention, and treatment of coronavirus (CoV) infections. Work includes model virus replication, genetics, and molecular biology using murine hepatitis virus (MHV). Training and projects also include emerging human CoVs, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) CoV and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) CoV. The research occurs at the interface of virus replication and development of countermeasures including antiviral candidates, vaccines, and novel virus-based therapies. The scientific program involves collaborations with leading scientists in academia, industry, and government. This position anticipates independence, leadership skills, and utilization of frontline technologies, including reverse genetics, synthetic genomics, and next-generation sequencing. The role also provides opportunities for training and research at biosafety level 3 and with select-agent viruses (SARS and MERS).
1.Conduct and trouble-shoot research with minimal supervision
Â·Plan, design, and implement research projects
Â·Establish and validate research protocols
Â·Develop standard operating procedures for data collection, evaluation, and analysis
Â·Collect and interpret complex research data
Â·Generate reports, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
2.Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for installation, validation, calibration, and operation of complex scientific equipment
3.Contribute to research so as to merit authorship on scientific communications, including meeting presentations and publications
Â·Perform literature and library searches
Â·Perform collaborative or independent research projects/experiments
Â·Present research findings in laboratory setting, local institutional forums, and extramural scientific conferences
Â·Assist in preparation of grant applications, contract proposals, and manuscripts
4. Provide research supervision and training
Â·Train new technical staff, graduate students, medical students
Â·Provide technical guidance to students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty as needed
5. Exercise budget responsibility
Â·Make recommendations to principal investigator regarding staff, supply, and equipment needs
Â·Monitor expenditures of funds
6. Maintain open communication; serve as liaison between the laboratory and external entities
â¢Fosteropen contact betweenprincipal investigator and collaborating professionals, divisional and departmental administrative personnel, Institutional Biosafety, Purchasing, Human Resources, Facilities Management, and other institutional departments and offices as required
Â·Interface with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities, collaborating professionals, and vendors
Basic Qualifications. Job requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, preferably with a microbiology emphasis, and substantive prior wet-lab experience in an area relevant to virology research. Experience with tissue culture, virus replication, and/or antivirals is beneficial but not required.
