New York University’s Leonard N. The Center for Sustainable Business (CSB), within the BSP, aims to assist current and future business leaders develop the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to build value for society and protect the planet by addressing environmental and social challenges. The Data Analyst position is an exciting opportunity to assist the academic director design, coordinate, and deliver the CSB’s research agenda.
Research agenda: The CSB is focused on research that helps accelerate our transition to the next phase of capitalism…from a system focused on maximizing short-term shareholder profits to one focused on creating long-term, sustainable stakeholder value. Its research applies a holistic view of sustainability to include environmental, social, governance and economic issues. Current research projects are focused on developing a more comprehensive model for quantifying and monetizing the business case for sustainability. Our projects are focused on, among other things, the business and societal benefits delivered by a deforestation free beef supply chain in Brazil, and identifying new metrics for measuring the value delivered through more sustainable practices in the automotive industry. Additional research themes focus on improving the marketing content companies develop and deliver to engage the consumer on sustainable consumption, and using big data and analytics to identify the most profitable and sustainable business strategies.
The Data Analyst will work with the CSB’s research team to manage and analyze project data and research outcomes for publication. This will include synthesizing the current literature, developing surveys and other data collection instruments, analyzing data, and preparing publications for the both the academic and business press. Given these expectations, we seek an individual with qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, the ability to conduct network analysis as well as other traditional statistical analyses including multivariate statistics and data mining. Experience analyzing financial data a must. The ideal candidate will share our commitment to sustainable business and bring fresh ideas for research designed to drive and support change by practitioners.
Oversee data analysis in research projects to be defined in conjunction with the Academic Research Director. Run statistical analyses including financial, multi-variate statistics, and text and network analysis such as SAS, R, SPSS, MaxQDA, and UCINET or similar software. Willingness to learn new software as needed.
Assist CSB staff to prepare papers for publication in academic and business press.
Manage students and interns working closely with the CSB research team.
Assist with project proposal development.
Prepare presentations that promote the CSB research agenda for conference presentations, and represent the CSB at events.
Other duties, as assigned.
PhD or MS in data science (ideally in a business-related field e.g. finance, economics, supply chain, operations).
Research experience and knowledge of company financials and market data required
Research experience and knowledge of the themes of sustainable business a plus.
Ability to gather, evaluate, and summarize published research on sustainable business practices; translate high-level concepts into meaningful learnings and tools for business leaders is a must.
Ability to design and carry out original research.
Excellent writing skills.
Ability to manage simultaneously multiple research projects and deadlines.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, and also as part of a team, and be flexible to manage all aspects of the research process.
