The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is the premier association of health information management (HIM) professionals worldwide. Serving 52 affiliated component state associations and more than 103,000 health information professionals (including over 70,000 members), it is recognized as the leading source of "HIM knowledge," and is a respected authority for rigorous professional education, credentialing, and training.
Founded in 1928 to improve health record quality, AHIMA has played a leadership role in the effective management of health data and medical records needed to deliver quality healthcare to the public. AHIMA members affect the quality of patient information and patient care at every touchpoint in the healthcare delivery cycle. Its members perform diverse roles in healthcare and are employed in a variety of work settings, including hospitals, physician offices, ambulatory care facilities, managed care facilities, long-term care facilities, consulting firms, information system vendors, colleges and universities, insurance providers, pharmaceutical companies, rehabilitation centers, and other venues.
AHIMA is taking a lead in advancing informatics, data analytics, healthcare privacy, and information governance for healthcare while continuing to lead and support world class HIM practices and standards. AHIMA members stay one step ahead through AHIMA’s cutting-edge programs and professional development opportunities, including comprehensive continuing education.
Headquartered in Chicago, IL, AHIMA employs approximately 130 individuals, including its Washington, D.C. office. AHIMA is the “umbrella” 501(c)(6) organization. Additional components include the AHIMA Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) organization for fund-raising, research, and development; the Commission on Certification of Health Informatics and Information Management Professionals (CCHIIM) serves as the founding member organization of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) an independent 501(c) (3) organization and 52 affiliated component state association (CSA) members as well as global members. AHIMA also represents an extensive volunteer network encompassing the House of Delegates, 100+ online communities of practice, and numerous task forces and work groups focused on various specialty aspects of the profession. AHIMA actively advocates for the HIM profession and influences public policy in order to advance quality information and improve the quality of healthcare.
The CEO of AHIMA is responsible to the board of directors, and also provides leadership to the AHIMA Foundation, CEE, and CCHIIM. In fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the CEO is guided by the AHIMA Board’s strategic objectives, AHIMA’s vision, mission, and values, and all other policies established by the board.
The CEO of AHIMA is responsible for the general supervision, direction, and management of the affairs of the entire spectrum of AHIMA activities.
It is expected that the CEO spend approximately 50 percent of their time on external issues, relationship-building, policy influencing, and industry-wide networking. This has been a significant shift over the years, as the role of the CEO has become much more strategic. The CEO provides strategic direction to the senior management team responsible for managing the internal staff, day-to-day operations and tactical program implementation. It is anticipated that this emphasis on external relationship-building will be required of the new CEO as well.
This is a wonderful opportunity to serve as an advocate for highly-regarded profession and influence the direction and growth of AHIMA. For a highly-motivated individual, this is a chance to make a difference and shape the evolving future of an important national and international healthcare player.
