Provide advising, counseling and administrative services to international students and family members (including but not limited to visa status, employment authorization, social security, taxation, immigration / cross-cultural / financial / academic and personal issues, etc). Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to international students (i.e. Departments of Homeland Security, Justice, Labor and State). Reports to the Assistant Director, International Student & Scholar Services.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Ensure proper administration of university and international student/scholar compliance with federal regulations regarding Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
Test, implement, and monitor software to batch process documents and track international students using information residing in university systems
Prepare and process documents for students and scholars to the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
Respond to internal/external inquiries concerning United States immigration rules and regulations regarding international students, scholars, faculty members, and/or dependents
Provide advising, counseling and immigration services to international students, scholars and dependents regarding legal (i.e. immigration, cross-cultural, financial, academic, and personal issues and concerns
Examine, interpret and decide legal immigration issues on behalf of the federal government that are legally binding on the university, NEOMED, and international students, dependents, faculty and administrators
Respond to internal and external inquiries concerning U.S. immigration rules and regulations regarding international students, dependents, faculty and administrators
Prepare and process immigration petitions and other documents for international students
Monitor and stay current on applicable laws regarding international students
Maintain student files, records and data in accordance with federal regulations
Assist in the coordination and preparation of annual reports, audits and on-site reviews as required by the Border Security Act
Collaborate with colleagues across campus in providing services and advocacy for international students
Support the Assistant Director with the coordination of orientation, excursions and cultural programs
Perform related duties as assigned
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and three months to one year of experience in: education or student-related services to include experience working with and interacting with diverse, international, multicultural populations; or foreign study abroad or comparable international experience. Must possess general familiarity with immigration laws relative to F1, F2, J1, and J2 visas.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in related field; formal training by NAFSA / Association of International Educators and prior experience serving as a Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer or the ability to complete formal training and attain certification within a reasonable timeframe following hire; fluency in a foreign language; and Notary Public for the State of Ohio or the ability to acquire within a reasonable timeframe following hire.
