The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks a full-time data scientist to join its research team. The data scientist will join a group of researchers engaged in empirical scholarship on digital communication, politics, and collective action who seek to address the most important issues and challenges in the public interest at the intersection of political communication and digital media. This position will focus primarily on computational social science and the application of data science methods and digital media analysis to questions of media, democracy, and governance.
Role The data scientist will conduct original research, support the work of other researchers at the center, and lead efforts to expand the application of data science and computation social science methods to the portfolio of projects at the center. The substantive work will build upon and expand the capability of the Media Cloud platform, and will explore new methods for the study of media manipulation in its many manifestations, including efforts that are mediated through artificial intelligence.
The data scientist will play a role in center-wide efforts, including:
Offering mentorship and educational training to fellows, Berkman Klein staff, and research assistants.
Supervising and mentoring summer interns.
Engaging in the design and implementation of new research and education methods and projects.
Identifying new sources of data and developing new approaches to data collection.
The ideal candidate will be part of the intellectual community at the Berkman Klein Center and will have the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences at the Center, at Harvard Law School, and beyond. The data scientist will have frequent opportunities to expand their knowledge of computational social science, technology, and law. The Center's community includes a wide range of people working on issues related to Internet and society, including scholars, practitioners, innovators, and others committed to understanding and advancing the public interest.
The data scientist will report to Berkman Klein Center's research director. This position is a full-time role based in Cambridge, MA.

Advanced degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 5 years' experience. Education may count toward experience.
Demonstrated interest, competence, and experience in computational social science and data science methods using online data, including experience working with large online data sets (online media, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc.). Academic or industry experience studying computational propaganda.
Experience in both social network analysis and automated text analysis methods, as well as the combination of these two methods in applied in research projects. Expertise in the modeling of social networks, including the development of exponential random graph models.
Experience building machine learning models (both supervised and unsupervised learning), NLP, and other automated text analysis methods. Preference for programming skills in R, Python, and PostgreSQL. Experience accessing and pulling data from APIs and with entire data pipeline (accessing/cleaning/munging data, performing network or statistical analysis, visualization, and presentation of data).
Experience studying foreign online political networks, including Russia or other authoritarian/semi-authoritarian regimes, and their methods for manipulating online communities or speech online. Knowledge of and experience in studying state sponsored campaigns online, state efforts to disrupt opposition movements, and collective action online.
Strong communications skills with an established track record of producing high caliber research papers. Ability to work independently and with multi-disciplinary research teams.
