Join us and start doing your life's best work.(sm)Reporting directly to the Community & State (C&S) Vice President of Communications, the Director of External Communications, is responsible for providing strategic communications oversight, counsel and management for key national programs, initiatives and activities designed to build our brand, enhance our reputation and drive our business goals. The position also provides integrated communications support for C&S brand-level programming including national initiative communications, media relations, social engagement, crisis and issues management, content strategy, M&A activities and other key corporate-level projects. This position currently will oversee the External Communications team and work closely with the other members of the C&S marketing and communications organization, business development and appropriate plan level personnel and UHC Regional Communications team. The position also supports general communications operations (daily clips, media monitoring, etc.) and will also provide communications support for plan level initiatives and issues that may have direct impact on the reputation of C&S, UHC and UHG. Primary Responsibilities:Working closely with the C&S Vice President of Communications:Manage the C&S external communications function including brand-level communications strategy, crisis and issues management, M&A communications, policy communications, and external executive engagement Serve as media contact for inquiries that impact C&S at the national level, and support regional and trade media as needed Establish a resource prioritization approach to ensure that communications resources are aligned to business objectives and focused on the right priorities in the right markets In conjunction with marketing team leads, establish a multi-channel C&S content management strategy and system. Align with strategies across the enterprise In partnership with UHC and C&S Digital and Social teams, establish and manage social engagement strategies, i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Partner with the policy and market development teams to build and implement executive visibility programming for key C&S executives, and support executive participation in key external engagements Provide communications oversight, counsel and support to the C&S external communications team Provide communications counsel and support for product, clinical and integrated health and social services programs and initiatives as appropriate Provide fundamental communications tools, training and resources to business teams, (e.g. media training) Establish policies, protocols and SOPs to ensure utilization of best practices and cross-functional, cross-geographic alignment at both the national and state plan levels Analyze data from evaluation processes to identify/implement changes to communications strategies, content and delivery approaches Responsible for external communications operations and measurement Serve as a liaison to identify/align communications efforts across organizational lines
Required Qualifications:A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in communications or journalism Demonstrate understanding of UnitedHealthcare business (organizational structure, business strategies, current initiatives, goals and objectives, global businesses) Ability to navigate across the organization (e.g., matrix structures, leadership, key stakeholders) 8+ years of experience in corporate and/or brand communications 3+ years of experience in managing high-performing teams with proven staff mentorship and development expertise Experience in leading and driving content strategy and distribution channels. Demonstrate knowledge of web-based communications vehicles, audio/video production tools/technologies Proven writing, editing and oral communication skills, ability to persuade and build consensus with internal and external stakeholders Demonstrate understanding of external news and media outlets/channels and how to navigate them Strong knowledge and experience in integrated communications and the ability leverage paid, earned, social and owned media into multi-media, multi-channel communications campaigns and initiatives Ability to perform communication needs assessments to align the needs of the business and define audiences to be addressed Experience and proven effectiveness in managing crisis communications and sensitive issues Uncompromising eye for quality, exceptional writing and editing skills Strong organizational skills with creative problem-solving and multi-tasking skills, and the flexibility to effectively and quickly adapt to changing prioritiesPreferred Qualifications:Health care experienceCareers at UnitedHealthcare Community & State.
