The Director of Economic Development will work with internal and external partners to develop and implement a strategy related to the University's focus areas in economic development:
1. Support economic development partners' efforts to recruit and retain companies in Virginia; 2. Fuel growth through innovation, entrepreneurship, and research; 3. Provide workforce with skills needed by industry.
The Director of Economic Development is a key figure on the University's economic development team. The Director provides leadership during the identification, coordination, direction, and implementation of economic development initiatives across the University. The Director represents the University to internal and external constituencies in economic development-related discussions. The Director works with relevant unit leaders in the development of proposals, incorporating school and institutional goals, priorities, and capabilities and maintaining strong communication throughout the process.
Required Minimum Level of Education: *Degree Required
Required Specific Degree/Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution.
Preferred Minimum Level of Education: *Degree or Equivalent Experience Preferred
Preferred Specific Degree/Training: Master's degree in business, economics, engineering, communication, or other related field
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Considerable - 4 to 7 years
Required Specific Experience: -Significant experience building alliances and leading high impact teams, projects, and programs in a matrixed environment; -Knowledge of academic and industry environments and cultures, and ability to translate and match needs and capabilities; -Significant experience working with C-suite executives, university leaders, legislators, and government agencies to influence and impact business investment and economic development decisions; -Demonstrated experience with public-private partnerships, economic development initiatives, and pan-University initiatives.
Preferred Specific Experience: -Relevant experience working with senior executives, university leaders, and state agencies to influence and impact business investment and economic development. -Relevant experience partnering with local, regional, and state economic development organizations.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills with ability to serve as an interface between academia, industry, and government; -Ability to work collegially within a large, complex system and to negotiate with a wide range of constituencies. -Ability to project a clear message on the University's role in economic development with faculty, staff, students, community, corporate, and government leaders. -Ability to develop compelling value proposition statements and related materials and incorporate them into a broader communication strategy. -Ability to identify opportunities, assess situations, assemble multi-party initiatives, find mutually beneficial areas for collaboration, and communicate to all stakeholders. -Project management for complex, rapidly developing initiatives that may be ambiguous and with shifting participants.
