We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Tumor Registrar, supporting our Perlmutter Cancer Center, an NCI-Designated Cancer Center with accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. There is an opportunity for telecommuting.
In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for maintaining the Cancer Registry by abstracting all newly diagnosed cancer patients seen at the NYU Langone Medical Center. Coordinates and completes all tasks assigned under the Cancer Program standards of the NYU Medical Center, i.e. Tumor Registry, which may include weekly tumor conferences, Cancer Committee meetings, preparation for ACOS accreditation and surveys, maintenance of long-term patient follow-up, quarterly/annual reporting, reporting cancer data to NCDB upon request, weekly reports to the New York State Cancer Registry.
The registrar assigns ICD-O site and morphology codes.
The registrar demonstrates ability to analyze pathology, radiology reports and other pertinent information from the medical records to complete abstracts for all eligible cancer cases.
The registrar is responsible for case finding; identify analytic versus non-analytic cases vs. non-reportable cases
The Registrar assists in patient follow-up, as well as serving as an information resource to physicians, other departments and health care providers to ensure quality data.
The registrar must be familiar with HIPAA standards and able to communicate such to physicians, hospital staff, patients and all other customers.
Corrects all errors received by NYS or/and COC as applies and directed by Senior CTR
Attends training to keep current on all registry specific abstracting changes
Enters clinical and demographic information into the cancer registry database
The registrar will assist with the preparation of data submissions to the National Cancer Data Base, internal quality reviews, state audits, patient outcome studies and other related duties as assigned.
Responsible to maintain a weekly quota provided by the Supervisor and Program Manager

Associates Degree and 1-2 years of experience in ICD-9-CM coding or an area directly related to the position. Completion of an NCRA – Accredited Formal Education Degree or certification and 160 hour practicum, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification required. Experience with automated patient information systems and knowledge of the personal computer work environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies
Knowledge of the Impac Metriq Registry and the New York State Tumor Registry abstraction system
Required Licenses: Certified Tumor Registrar
