The University of Pittsburgh's Department of Biomedical Informatics is seeking a Software Developer. The Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) is a research network that has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for the past 10 years. MIDAS researchers use computational, statistical, and mathematical models to study the dynamics of epidemic and endemic infectious diseases. MIDAS researchers have also played an important role during actual outbreaks by applying the mathematical models, embodied as agent-based simulators, to predict the effect of vaccination, workplace closure, and other interventions on the behalf of government agencies.
This position will be with the MIDAS Informatics Services Group (ISG). The primary responsibility of the ISG is to provide services to the network. Currently, ISG provides services in the form of high-performance compute platforms (HPC), data visualization services, ontology-based publication search and retrieval, synthetic population generation, and a single point of access to configure and run disease transmission models.
The primary responsibilities of the applicant will be to develop software and systems for the ISG. This programmer will be a part of an Agile Scrum development team that has responsibility for creating high quality, documented software that will be used by decision makers at all levels of the government to predict and control infectious disease outbreaks.
The software development team is responsible for:
Creating and maintaining a wide range of production-quality software including Web applications, Web services, desktop applications, and epidemic models.
Solving challenging problems through software development in the domains of epidemiology, artificial intelligence, probability theory, medicine, and economics.
Collaborating with researchers and contributing to academic papers.
