Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Director of University News and Media Relations for University Communications and Marketing. This position reports to the Vice President for University Communications and Marketing. The Senior Director of University News and Media Relations is responsible for the development and execution of messages, strategies, policies, procedures and plans for effectively advancing Rutgers, The State University through news, trade, social and other digital media.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages media relations, issues, crises and emergency communications for the overall Rutgers system and the central administration.
Serves as a primary spokesperson to the news media.
Monitors and analyzes trend data and to strategically promote the messages and initiatives of the central administration as well as system wide programs consistent with the University's priorities.
Works closely with the chief communications officers for each chancellor to understand local priorities and issues and to coordinate work across the system.
Promotes messages and content in ways that generate maximum positive exposure and effectively meet strategic goals through vision and proactive leadership.
Develops and manages annual, monthly, and initiative-based news & social media plans. Effectively utilizes external news organizations, direct digital/social distribution, and the department’s own news and promotion channels (i.e. Rutgers Today, social media and specialized distribution lists) to effectively promote the university internally and externally.
Develops the most effective methods, strategies and tactics for promoting the priorities of the central administration, announcements by the university-wide governing boards, and system wide strategic initiatives.
Manages the daily operations providing staff guidance in strategy, messaging, planning, editorial, production and distribution.
Encourages a collaborative team-oriented environment to promote content coordination and cross-unit collaboration.
Proactively works with staff to encourage a client-centered focus and ensure professional development is a priority.
Actively participates as a member of the UCM management team.
Assesses the effectiveness of earned media relative to the elevation of the university’s prominence.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree and at least ten years of experience in media relations, communications or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be a strategic thinker, proven problem-solver and must value collaboration with other people and units.
Must be able to quickly assess issues and crises and develop and execute effective plans to address them.
Must be able to handle multiple competing priorities and work confidently, diplomatically and decisively under stress.
Requires experience managing teams and/or staff by promoting and fostering a collaborative and client-focused approach.
Must have experience developing and executing short- and long-term communications plans.
Experience using data to influence decisions and to report effectiveness is strongly desired.
