Perform and assist with a variety of laboratory services for the College of Dentistry including processing of clinical specimens for College of Dentistry biopsy service, testing biological indicator spore tests from nationwide Sterilizer Monitoring Program clients, perform occupational exposure testing for dental healthcare providers, as well as provide support and communicate with outside healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
Provide Specialty Clinical/Technical Service/Patient Care
Assist in and perform accessioning and processing of clinical histology specimens for College of Dentistry Surgical Oral Pathology Laboratory to provide data for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.
Undergo training for and perform basic histotechnologist activities related to processing, microtome cutting and staining of surgical pathology specimens.
Assume responsibility for maintenance and trouble shooting of specialized laboratory equipment while adhering to standard laboratory quality, safety, and operating procedures.
Oversees daily responsibility for quality controls in Surgical Oral Pathology Laboratory.
Assume responsibility for accurate record keeping in a web based laboratory information system.
Maintain inventory of laboratory chemicals/supplies weekly.
Assume responsibility for efficient and timely faxing and mailing of pathology reports, and slide consultation sendouts and returns.
Perform processing of bacteriologic spore-based test strips for College of Dentistry Sterilizer Monitoring Program.
Receive, culture, incubate, and record findings related to nationwide spore-based sterilization unit efficacy tests.
Analyze sterilizer monitoring bacterial spore tests daily, conduct staining techniques as needed, record and provide results of the sterilization tests to the contributing units within and outside the University.
Assume responsibility for accurate record keeping in a Windows based software system.
Process client orders for additional spore strip materials abiding by University of Iowa Cash Handling policy.
Serve as customer service contact for sterilizer monitoring clients, including notifying clients of positive test results and mailing client test histories.
Perform CLIA-waived fingerstick blood borne pathogen testing for occupational exposures.
Perform annual Tuberculin Skin tests for dental healthcare providers and employees at the College of Dentistry.
Communicates and provides health related information and test results.
Knowledge of clinical skills necessary for assisting in patient care, education and/or treatment, history taking, therapeutic planning and monitoring, diagnostic testing; achieve optimized outcomes in therapy and clinical treatment.
Knowledge of the factors contributing to quality patient care, treatment and education; the ability to influence these factors in a positive way.
Knowledge of training and development processes, tools and techniques to develop clinical skills of students, residents and staff.
Collaborate/Communicate with Health Care Team
Knowledge of and ability to use medical equipment to examine specimes according to test requests and to obtain accurate results for further disease diagnosis following laboratory policies and ethics.
Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and all health care practioners providing clinical and technical support.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education
Knowledge of and ability to use relevant techniques to prepare clinical specimens, for the purposes of testing and analysis, in compliance with established institutional protocols and quality standards.
Provides and maintains quality control materials and records as specified by CLIA regulations. Stays current and complies with EHS and ChemTracker related duties to maintain a safe laboratory, manage chemical inventories, and assure regulatory compliance.
Human Resources Management
Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual team, and organizational performance.
Provides instruction to residents and students of policies and procedures concerning the SOP Laboratory/SMP.
Knowledge of and ability to maintain effective and smooth operations in a clinical service or department utilizing various management principles and techniques.

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
1-3 years experience in a clinical healthcare and/or laboratory setting is required utilizing the following skillset:
Health Care Policy and Ethics Compliance – Working Experience - Knowledge of health care policies for all clinical practices and applicable laws and regulations governing proper clinical practice; ability to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations.
Implements health care policies and ethical requirements when providing clinical services.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Experience in a position utilizing the following skillsets:
Laboratory/Healthcare Record Management – Working Experience - Knowledge of and ability to establish, store, and manage up-to-date laboratory/healthcare records for relevant healthcare participants while following relevant guidelines.
Maintain release of patient information and pathology materials to outside institutions adhering to HIPAA guidelines.
Track pending laboratory cases to ensure efficient turnaround times.
Laboratory Equipment Operation — Working Experience - Knowledge of and ability to operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis while adhering to standard laboratory quality, safety and operating procedures.
Documents defective equipment and reports it to an appropriate supervisor.
Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and maintain laboratory equipment.
Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced high volume work environment.
Demonstrated ability to work with Microsoft Office.
Certification in a laboratory science by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Demonstrated excellence in customer service via phone, e-mail, and fax .
