Reporting to the Managing Director of Infrastructure within Harvard University IT, the Services Director, Infrastructure Technology Services (ITS) DevOps is responsible for:
Leading a team of DevOps engineers, systems administrators, and database administrators
Providing sustainment engineering and operational support for heterogeneous IT infrastructure deployed in both Cloud and on-prem datacenters
Developing and nurturing a DevOps culture for HUIT ITS and its customers that is focused on collaboration, automation, systems integrity, and the academic mission
This role will co-lead the ITS DevOps team with the ITS Technology Director, DevOps, building an effective partnership based on aligned goals and clear definition of each manager's role and areas of responsibility.
As the Service Owner for ITS DevOps managed services and offerings in the HUIT Service Catalog, the Director is responsible for all stages of the services lifecycle: strategy, design, transition, operations, and continuous improvement. This Service Owner role is also accountable for ensuring successful resolution of incidents, problems, and changes by the team, including major incident escalation and ownership.
The role will also partner with the Managing Director, ITS Business Operations, and HUIT Finance to provide budget management for IT DevOps services.
The Director is charged with building and leading a high performing team of approximately 20 staff managed by three managers. In doing so, the role will provide professional development and performance management for the team. This will include talent development, cross-training to ensure robust coverage across the team, addressing performance issues, and coordinating the formal and informal training of staff to develop news skills for HUIT's cloud, DevOps, and automation goals. Using a portfolio management process, the Director will prioritize and coordinate DevOps activities with its key customers and partners, with special emphasis on our partnership with the CTO Office for the Cloud Program and decommissioning of the 60 Oxford Datacenter.
The Director will regularly engage with HUIT leadership, with our key customer contacts, and with relevant governance groups to effectively balance customer priorities, operational work, migration activities, and compliance requirements. A critical success factor for this role will be effective resource management of the team, clear communications, and building trust with both partners and customers.
Through co-leadership with the ITS Technology Director, DevOps, the role leads a services delivery team whose responsibilities include:
Systems administration of Linux and Windows systems in both the Cloud and on-prem datacenters
Database administration for ITS-managed databases (Oracle, RDS, MySQL)
Operations of Cloud-based assets in AWS (EC2, VPC, ELB, Security Groups, etc)
Automated delivery and sustainment of ITS-managed assets through the use of automation and tools such as GitHub, Ansible, Python, and CloudFormation
Support for services ranging from OS to Application infrastructure support including software installs, databases, middleware, and web servers
Maintain the integrity of ITS-managed assets through operational support for backup and recovery, systems and application monitoring, software patching, systems and DB tuning, and routine maintenance
The Director should embrace and drive change throughout the organization, be willing to break down silos to improve customer service, and effectively communicate with partners and customers.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Minimum of 7-10 years staff and IT management experience of systems administration and database staff
Bachelor's degree required, preferably with coursework in computer science, information systems or information technology.
Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in an IT operating environment
The following qualifications are preferred:
Demonstrated strong organizational skills are a must with proven ability to lead change. Experience in developing and implementing service recovery models, IT policies, procedures and standards.
Ability to develop, manage and communicate a budget and work with financial analyst to develop rate models is critical.
Exceptional written, interpersonal and presentation/public speaking communication skills are all important to success.
Must have excellent technology and project management skills, demonstrated ability to manage through influence and negotiation.
Broad knowledge and understanding of emerging technologies, Cloud and DevOps concepts, standards, and tools.
Experience with ITIL and adoption of standard service management practices, Agile development methodology, technology trends and their applicability in a university setting.
