Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Director for Federal Relations is responsible for continuing to establish and foster relations with federal elected officials, policy makers, and higher education associations to promote advocacy efforts on behalf of Virginia Commonwealth University.
The individual will research and provide information to elected officials about VCU contributions to various communities and issues of interest as well as conceptualize and implement informational programs, special events, and issue briefings that reflect University priorities in order to inform and increase support among legislators, federal agency representatives and their staff. The Assistant Director will develop and initiate cultivation strategies and conduct outreach activities for legislative policies at the federal level; identify issues and obtain information regarding pending legislation and legislative actions; and implement advocacy campaigns in support of VCU initiatives through meetings, mailings, advertisements and special event coordination when appropriate. The individual will represent the unit and the University at meetings, hearings, and external events related to federal relations to generate greater VCU presence via volunteer development and programming; analyze and evaluate complex issues and situations involving legislators and community leaders; determine need for referral or action; develop and implement solutions; and analyze legislation and regulations that affect research funding and higher education policy.
Advanced degree or equivalent combination of work experience and training Federal Government Relations Experience Federal Policy Analysis Familiarity with federal research agencies and their processes Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
5 years Federal Government Relations Experience Prior Service in a Congressional Office or relevant Executive Branch Position Prior experience representing a Public R1: Highest Research Activity University
