The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) produced its first Greenhouse Gas Inventory in 2007 and a Climate Action Plan in 2009. The Climate Action Plan is guided by a steering committee which works with the Greenhouse Gas Specialist to maintain the viability and monitor the progress of the Climate Action Plan. The principal functions of the Greenhouse Gas Specialist are:
Collect, analyze, and track emissions data from across the UNC-CH campus.
Report on UNC-CH's annual greenhouse gas emissions and other sustainability indicators.
Prepare and maintain the current and historical inventory of the UNC-CH's greenhouse gas emissions.
Manage the Climate Action Plan working with multiple departments throughout the university to implement various projects that reduce GHG emissions.
Manage updates to UNC-CH's Climate Action Plan web-site and provide status reports on progress of plan.
Develop relevant key performance indicators to assess UNC-CH's progress on reducing emissions and report results through presentations, publications, web-sites, and events.
Coordinate with the Steering Committee in guiding the development of and manage the strategic plan of initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Perform various energy data analysis and modeling impacting utility operations and greenhouse gas emissions.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
The Greenhouse Gas Specialist must have excellent data management and quantitative analysis skills. The employee must also possess superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to convey complex data in user friendly formats. Personal computer skills, as well as effective persuasion and change management skills are also necessary. An understanding of energy technologies and activities is also important. This includes technologies to generate and distribute electricity, steam, and chilled water; building systems including lighting, air handling equipment, building automation controls and process equipment; transportation systems including air travel, vehicular travel and transit; and waste management and disposal practices.
KNOWLEDGE – PROFESSIONAL: Science and environmental literacy, knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies for greenhouse gas.
University, local, State and Federal guidelines.
Ability to stay current on emerging industry trends and incorporate changes/updates to campus programs.
Strategic planning, decision-making, compliance, enterprise risk management, asset management, value and supply chain management, communications and social responsibility along with organizational governance.

Assist in corrective action strategies; assess, determine, plan and implement corrective action for standard to non-standard situations.
Assist in mitigating risks, engage stakeholders and actively involved in maintaining external partnerships.
TRAININGANDEDUCATION: Ability to educate in subject area – greenhouse gas.
Possess an understanding of current environmental issues, and ability to engage others in obtaining credible information on energy conservation and carbon reduction opportunities and related risks to the organization.
Ability to design and develop training outreach programs; coordinate and train others on subject matter to meet the level of the audience.
Ability to design and develop educational materials of moderate complexity or for a specialize area.
SAFETYANDHEALTHCOMPLIANCE: Ability to understand applicable policies and procedures, and maintain conditions that ensure compliance.
Apply energy conservation and carbon reduction perspectives to the organization's compliance and enterprise programs to assist in meeting short and long term goals.
Utilize a systems approach and compile necessary data for relevant energy conservation and carbon reduction considerations to be incorporated into the climate action plan.
Ability to review permits/projects for design and implementation of work; establish procedures for operational compliance and track performance of permit holders.
Ability to perform self-audits and review self-audits completed by others.
Ability to ensure proper verifications and certifications are obtained and maintained.
COMMUNICATION: Ability to interpret and communicate information to individuals or groups; ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience; ability to clearly and concisely convey written information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message; ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.
Work effectively in communicating the organization's position on energy conservation and carbon reduction.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in quantitative analysis, engineering, environmental science, economics or other related degree, a minimum of 3 years experience in data management and analysis, and 3 years of project or program management experience. GHG Specialist must have excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to manage a Climate Action Plan that has a large, diverse group of stakeholders, and the ability to convey complex data in user friendly formats. Previous experience with calculating and reporting greenhouse gas inventories is also preferred.
