Primary Responsibilities: Research and resolution of coding projects as assigned - Performs a variety of activities involving the coding of medical records as a mechanism for indexing medical information which is used for completion of statistics for hospital, regional and government planning and accurate hospital reimbursement - Codes inpatient and/or outpatient records and identifies diagnoses and procedures daily according to the schedule set within the coding unit. - Accurately assigns ICD-10 and/or CPT-4 codes in accordance with Coding Departmental guidelines maintaining no less than 95% accuracy in choice and sequencing of codes - Identifies and abstracts records consistently and accurately - Consistently demonstrates time awareness: strives to meet deadlines; reduces non-essential interruptions to an absolute minimum - Meets departmental productivity standards for coding and entering inpatient and/or outpatient records - Participates in coding meetings and education conferences to maintain coding skills and accuracy - Demonstrates willingness and flexibility in working additional hours or changing hours - Demonstrates thorough understanding on how position impacts the department and hospital - Demonstrates a good rapport and works to establish cooperative working relationships with all members of departmental and Hospital staff - Attends conference calls as necessary to provide information relating to Coding Specific Measurements of Performance - Quality audits are conducted monthly on 10% of all charts coded per coder - Production is monitored weekly/monthly to ensure coders are being productive Coder reports directly to the team coding supervisor
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree from recognized University Certifications accepted include CPC, CCS, COC, CIC, CPC-H - must be certified through AAPC or AHIMA (All coding candidates must have current coding certifications; must provide proof of certification with valid certification identification number) At least 1 year professional ED coding experience, strong proficiency (either pro or facility or both) 1-2 years overall coding experience Experience with ICD-10-CM (vol-1, 2, & 3) and CPT-4 coding, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology and disease processes Advanced knowledge of medical coding, billing systems and regulatory requirements Advanced knowledge of auditing concepts and principles Excellent organization and problem-solving skills Strong oral and written communication skills Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information Preferred Qualification: Professional coding experience from the hospital or office settings Careers with Optum.
