Advertised Summary Job Description: Data Science Institute at Columbia University is a world-leading institution in research and education in the theory and practice of the emerging field of data science. The Data Science Institute's mission involves advancing the state of the art in data science; transforming all fields, professions, and sectors through the application of data science, while ensuring the responsible use of data for the benefit of society. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Programs for the Data Science Institute of Columbia University, the Manager of Industry Engagement & Outreach exists to serve as a driving force for carrying out the Institute's mission through external outreach and collaboration with industry, foundations and government. By showcasing the Institute's profile as a global leader in Data Science research, education, technology innovation, and entrepreneurship, the Manager works to shape and facilitate increased engagement in the formation of strategic partnerships by curating new Industry affiliates, as well as fostering on-going collaboration and membership with the Institute's existing Industry Affiliates. Working closely with the Institute's Directorate, Communications, Development, and Operations team, the incumbent will provide leadership to expand both philanthropic and sponsored research opportunities with existing and new industry partners as part of these activities. These alliances will support a number of important initiatives at the Institute, including but not limited to, funding for academic and research programs, faculty and industry collaborations, M.S. in Data Science capstone course projects, internships, student recruitment and hiring, and executive training programs.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Understanding and representing Institute expertise is required to effectively engage with the community, hence an ability to have basic understanding of the research and application space for intelligent representation of our internal capability.
Demonstrated experience with the practices and norms of industry philanthropy or government grants. Demonstrated success in all phases of personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding large investments ($1,000,000 and above) from corporations, foundations or government funding. Knowledge of program design and budget creation for solicitations. A successful record of securing grants or gifts is essential.
A motivated self-starter with a demonstrated record of building and expanding industry relations in a university setting. Strong analytical skills required to evaluate opportunities, develop effective plans and strategies, assess feasibility, and evaluate results.
The successful candidate will have the ability to converse effectively regarding technical/scientific topics. The successful candidate will have the ability to engage with faculty and industry, specifically being able to convert complex technical content to a straight forward message. The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to interact with both internal and external constituents, and detailed & precise written communication skills.
Ability to quickly establish credible relationships with high level executives and build a broad knowledge about a variety of relevant industries essential.
Proven ability to work collegially and effectively with development professionals, school administrators and faculty, and other constituencies.
Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of attention to detail.
Must be able to travel and spend a majority of time planning, meeting with, and following up with prospects and existing donors.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in engineering or related discipline, and business development and/or industry relations experience in a research-intensive industry or university setting highly preferred.
