The director of advancement & leadership giving will manage the advancement team, and work closely with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s (LACO) Executive Director, Senior Director of Advancement & Strategic Engagement, Board of Directors and staff to meet annual contributed income goals. In support of the Orchestra’s mission, the Director of Advancement & Leadership Giving will help develop and implement strategies to support the organization’s comprehensive campaign and will maintain responsibility for creating and implementing a comprehensive leadership giving program, including planned and annual gifts. This position will be directly responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of current and prospective donors (with a focus on annual contributions between $2,500-25,000). The director will play a leading role in cross-departmental efforts to develop a pool of broad-based givers and major gift prospects through personal interaction, cultivation calls and stewardship opportunities spanning electronic and print media, recognition plans and events. The director must be equally comfortable in managing people as well as processes, and must be effective at building strong relationships with the Orchestra's volunteer leadership and donor base.
scope & responsibilities
In collaboration with LACO’s executive director, senior director of advancement & strategic engagement, development department and marketing department, the director of advancement & leadership giving is responsible for directing, planning and implementing key fundraising programs designed to attract and increase contributions from individuals and institutions, and to meet priority needs and fundraising goals of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Lead efforts to meet overall contributed income goals of $3.2M this fiscal year
Together with key board, staff and volunteers, meet organizational goal to increase annual giving to the Orchestra by $1M over the next three years, devising and implementing strategies to optimize cultivation and solicitation of major individual and planned gifts
Develop an annual comprehensive strategic plan for leadership giving, with a focus on designing and implementing a new framework, case, benefits program and volunteer committee for a leadership giving society and actively engaging those leadership givers in LACO's mission and activities through unique and substantive opportunities.
Work with volunteer leadership and independently to solicit renewed and/or increased gifts and steward prospective members to meet Annual Fund and Campaign goals by identifying, rating, cultivating and soliciting prospects
Maintain a portfolio of 30-50 donors and prospects in various stages of development through a robust calendar of cultivation calls, meetings and other activities throughout the gift cycle
Manage a team of four, overseeing foundation and government support, special events, annual giving, and moves management for major donor and board prospects
Work collaboratively with and in support of board committees, board members, volunteers, and staff as needed to cultivate and solicit donors for organizational priorities
Work to expand the Orchestra’s Legacy Society, building a robust planned giving program, including prospecting, events and recognition
Develop, prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects.
Work with the Events Associate and the Assistant Director of Advancement Operations to develop strategies for events attendees and sponsors to become major and annual donors to the Orchestra’s operating needs, endowment and Legacy Society
Work with the LACO Director of Finance and advancement team to establish annual budgets, formal major gifts policies and reporting procedures
Provide support and create opportunities for donor cultivation and stewardship at 35-45 concerts and special events annually
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested .
The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser with the ability to think strategically and work collaboratively and professionally with high-level volunteers and Orchestra staff and leadership. Must be self-motivated, self-starting, sophisticated, creative, and have strong attention to detail. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Advanced degree in business administration, arts administration or a related field is strongly desired. Six to eight years of relevant work experience in fundraising, with major and annual giving experience required.

Ability to understand the needs and interests of donors in order to develop relationships between them and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
Expertise in campaign fundraising desired
General knowledge of planned giving programs
Solid relationship-building skills, including an ability to work with staff, musicians, board members and volunteers.
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and donor tracking software

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, headquartered in downtown LA, was founded in 1968 as an artistic outlet for the recording industry’s most gifted musicians. The Orchestra’s artistic founder, cellist James Arkatov, envisioned an ensemble that would allow these conservatory-trained players to balance studio work and teaching with pure artistic collaboration at the highest level. With the financial backing of philanthropist Richard Colburn and managerial expertise from attorney Joseph Troy, who also became the Orchestra’s first president, LACO presented its first performances.
