Description About the Position: The Tennessee Education Research Alliance (TERA) is a research-policy-practice partnership between the Tennessee Department of Education and Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, housed at the Peabody Research Institute. Powered by a top-quality longitudinal data set and a commitment with the state to explore key questions of state policy and practice, TERA is poised to be a national leader in practice-focused research. TERA conducts research on questions of greatest urgency to the state and ensures that actionable findings are brought to the attention of policymakers and practitioners to whom they are important. TERA aims to directly and immediately inform Tennessee's education policy and practice. The Research Associate will be a critical member of the TERA team and will lead work in one of the four TERA research strands as well as serve as the primary data manager for TERA's extensive longitudinal data set. You will need to have strong independent research experience, advanced data management experience, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to create products that bridge the gap between research and practice. As a Research Associate, you will lead data collection, management, governance, and cleaning for longitudinal administrative data set. Additionally, you will manage graduate students work with data collection, cleaning, and governance, as well as prepare and publish original research, research syntheses, policy briefs, and other products as needed. You will independently carry out and design highly sophisticated and independent experiments and research projects, and report to the Executive Director and work in partnership with the Faculty Director to create key research products. Responsibilities: Lead data collection, management, governance, and cleaning for longitudinal administrative data set. Facilitate data-related communications both internally and external to the organization (e.g. facilitate bi-weekly data meetings; communicate with the Tennessee Department of Education regarding data questions). Manage data governance procedures. Manage annual data file cleaning and updating including creating files, cleaning existing files, and managing graduate students to also create and clean files. Create and oversee the processes of documenting existing and new data files. Train and manage graduate students who serve as data cleaners including orientation for new graduate students to organizational files, documentation, and processes. Track and facilitate data transfers from TDOE to the organization and from the organization to TDOE. Manage troubleshooting of data issues as required. Supervise data collection and analyses for research project(s) requiring independent interpretation of complex research data. Independently oversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research. Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects. Establish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures. Serve as research project lead. Lead/Assist with preparation of reports to Tennessee Department of Education, other state agencies, non-profit organizations, the Tennessee General Assembly, faculty/staff/students, and researchers. Lead/Assist with preparation of research syntheses and briefs on topics across the Alliance research agenda, especially focused on making connections across research topics and studies. Lead/Assist with manuscript preparation for leading academic journals. Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc. Lead/Assist in writing research grants and contract proposals.
