East Tennessee State University (ETSU) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
Located in northeast Tennessee's Appalachian Mountains, ETSU is a growing state-supported institution serving over 14,500 students, including more than 2,400 graduate students. The School of Graduate Studies has been a leader in recent growth and has the institutional support to continue that trajectory.
ETSU offers nearly 120 graduate programs of study in its eleven colleges and schools and is governed by the ETSU Board of Trustees. The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies is responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for overseeing all processes relating to graduate education and graduate student support at ETSU including recruitment, applications, admissions, student matriculation and graduation, graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships; facilitating and supporting development of new graduate programs and graduate curricula; and promoting the university's instructional mission as it relates to graduate education.
The Dean provides strong, effective advocacy externally and on academic and administrative councils of the University, providing representation of graduate education in strategic planning, and implementation of the ETSU 2016-2026 Strategic Plan – http://www.etsu.edu/president/documents/univ_strategicplan.pdf. Provides leadership and advocacy for all issues pertaining to graduate education;
Ensures admission of highly qualified and diverse graduate students;
Models commitment to the growth agenda reflected in the university's strategic plan;
Provides leadership in developing aspects of strategic planning regarding graduate education;
Provides oversight and management of graduate assistantship and graduate tuition scholarship contracts;
Provides services that enhance the quality of life and professional development for all graduate students;
Works collaboratively with graduate program coordinators, department chairs, other deans, directors, and vice presidents on projects related to graduate education;
Provides leadership and supervision for the School of Graduate Studies staff including all business-related activities;
Administers campus policies, standards, and requirements pertaining to graduate education;
Recommends, implements, and reinforces policies that affect graduate students;
Facilitates and supports development of new graduate degree and certificate programs;
Facilitates the university Graduate Council in review of proposals for new graduate programs and courses, review of applications for graduate faculty status, and establishment and review of policies in accordance with peer standards, state policies, and best practices in graduate education (e.g. SACS, THEC, CGS).

The candidate will have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree, a recognized record of scholarly research and a solid record of teaching excellence, substantial graduate supervisory experience and at least five years' experience in academic administration at the level of department chair or equivalent.
