Located in the of heart Greenwich Village, City and Country School is a coeducational independent school for children ages 2-13. Founded by 1914 by Caroline Pratt, C&C currently serves 365 students. We have two groups at every age level. We believe that education is fundamentally a social process, and strive to create a vibrant school community that supports each child’s innate passion for learning. We believe the teacher’s place is alongside the child, posing questions that elicit imaginative thinking, problem solving and decision-making in pursuit of a deeper perspective.
City and Country School seeks a full-time associate teacher to work alongside our XIIIs (Grade 8) Group Teacher in a variety of subjects including Language Arts, Math and Social Studies. The XIIIs study 20th century American history in a global context, focusing on the role of media and its impact. In recent years, the focus has been on the role of the media in the representation of race relations, studies encompassing the Civil War, immigration or Hurricane Katrina’s Aftermath. Through reading Richard Wright’s Black Boy, the XIIIs explore the historical context of the book by examining the period from 1908 to 1927, the years covered by that work. Finally, in the spring the XIIIs read Orwell’s 1984 as they explore control of media and surveillance by governments and corporate entities. In addition to strengthening and expanding their math, language arts and research skills, the XIIIs write and publish a bi-weekly newspaper that covers City and Country from IIs-XIIIs, along with other contemporary issues of interest to the XIIIs.
