We are seeking an engineer to support cryogenic & gas transfer research and development efforts on the Z Machine.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Work with both Sandia and external principal investigators to engineer and design, fabricate, and test gas transfer and cryogenic systems to support experiments on the Z machine with safe by design intent as a primary driver
Develop advanced capability to couple cryogenics to pulsed power systems, and work with the Z Facility Operations Team to transfer these new and innovative cutting edge cryogenic capabilities from the light lab onto the Z machine in both atmospheric and vacuum systems operations
Interface between Sandia gas transfer and tritium subject matter experts and the Z Facility Operations Team to plan and execute experiments
Work with the gas fill/cryo team on Z to troubleshoot systems, in the light lab to test and develop systems in a vacuum test stand, and to improve systems to enhance operational performance for reduce fielding time on the Z machine
Assist with work planning and controls to execute gas fill and cryogenic shots safely on the Z machine
Travel occasionally for joint experiments, workshops, and to present material at project meetings or scientific conferences
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field with 5 years of work experience in cryogenics and/or gas transfer; or 15 years of focused experience in cryogenics and/or gas transfer
Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
Master’s or PhD with thesis experience in cryogenics and gas transfer
Experience with engineering and designing hardware using standard engineering tool (CREO, SolidWorks), and advanced engineering tools like ABAQUS
Experience with thermal modeling of cryogenic systems using advanced multi-physics engineering software (combined engineering analysis with Computational Flow Dynamics, Heat Transfer, and Cryo Analysis)
Strong electro-mechanical skills such as the ability to use varied calibration and diagnostic instruments in light labs and at small facilities, and in supporting the setup of experimental equipment such as electronics, vacuum chambers, and data acquisition systems
Excellent verbal, written, planning, and interpersonal skills conducive to working as a part of a large team
Highly self-motivated, adaptable to change, and an excellent work ethic suited to making rapid progress through independently directed work
Experience fielding experiments or developing systems at a major pulsed power or high-energy-density physics facility
Co-authored publication or presentation at scientific conferences in a related area of research, such as cryogenics, gas transfer systems, nuclear fusion, neutron or x-ray radiation sources or diagnostics, high-energy-density or plasma physics
An active DOE L or Q clearance or active transferrable clearance with another US government agency, e.g. DOD Secret or Top Secret
The Pulsed Power Engineering Department (01693) provides fundamental, advanced, and cutting-edge engineering to support the advanced science research and development programs in the Pulsed Power Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. The department’s engineers, designers and technologists work together with the center’s scientists to deliver engineered solutions in the complex development needs of next generation advanced pulsed power accelerators, sustainment and enhancement of current machines, execution of experiments on these facilities, and maintenance of the oil/water/gas infrastructures. The department uses CREO® and SolidWorks® computer aided design platforms and advanced engineering tools like ABAQUS® and Sandia’s CTH Shock Physics and Sierra Suite Codes to perform complex engineering analysis in support of the Center’s programs.
