Lowell School, a co-educational progressive school of approximately 350 students in NW Washington, DC, is looking for a Middle School Art and Design Teacher.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in art education, possess knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of middle school students, and be well versed in best practices for delivering creative instruction in the visual arts. The Middle School art and design program at Lowell is highly respected, attracting many students with both talent and enthusiasm. This position will require a varied schedule, including occasional evenings and designated special events and performances that occur on weekends and outside of regular school hours. In keeping with the mission of the school, a successful candidate will foster a safe learning environment that promotes individuality, equity, and cultural competency.
The successful candidate will:
Possess a contagious enthusiasm for their craft
Create an engaging environment for teaching and learning
Prepare thoughtful lesson plans for classes
Develop strong, creative curriculum in painting, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, woodworking, printmaking, photography, and design
Create cross-disciplinary/integration opportunities with our STEAM teams and theater arts and humanities teachers
Include art history and knowledge of influential artists in program
Regularly exhibit student work in the Middle School building
Identify resources, ideas, and strategies to ensure student achievement
Build relationships with arts and other organizations in the region; use the abundance of resources in the area
Regularly assess student achievement and skill mastery
Participate in ongoing professional development
Manage classroom administration and record-keeping, including grades, attendance records, and student progress
Keep up art material inventory, organize space well, and manage budget effectively
Regularly communicate with students and parents to share curriculum, progress, and opportunities
Be familiar with maker spaces and related technology
Possibly serve as a student advisor
Experience with curriculum development, differentiation, constructivist teaching/learning, and assessment strategies, as well as a collaborative spirit and a ready sense of humor, are preferred. Skill in theater design and stagecraft a plus.
