Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The mission of the Controller's Office is to provide accountability for University resources and appropriate dissemination of financial information to maximize the use of University resources in compliance with governing accounting procedures, Federal and State legislation, policies and procedures, in addition to the Board of Governors, Appalachian State University, and external funding sources.
The Tax Accounting Technician is a member of the Tax Accountant's staff in the Controller's Office that manages tax compliance for the university. This position will serve as a resource to the University's Tax Accountant by following necessary procedures and utilizing reporting systems to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations and will assist the campus community with using business processes related to tax compliance as developed by the Controller’s Office.
Utilization of accounting methods, procedures, and accounting practices as related to taxation and reporting of payments made to non-resident foreign nationals, employees for moving expenses and other benefits, unrelated business income tax, reporting of North Carolina state sales taxes, and other routine tax processes overseen by the University.
Daily use of a range of technology, financial systems, and software packages to include the University's Banner ERP system and tax reporting software.
Develop forms and templates utilizing formulas for complex spreadsheets.
Justify and defend business processes as related to tax accounting, withholding, and reporting requirements.
Examine tax records and information to assure adherence to policies, standards, and regulations.
Maintain and manage accounting records of moderate variety and complexity, including preparation of required tax documents and reports.
Resolve problems of moderate complexity related to established processes and procedures for tax reporting.
Make suggestions for and/or implement process improvements in the Tax Office.
Interpret written Federal, State, and University tax and reporting guidelines to solve problems.
Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or accounting, or Associate’s degree in business administration or accounting and one year of related work experience.
Public university experience in a finance or accounting related department.
Experience with tax reporting software related to non-resident foreign national taxation desirable.
