The Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University invites applications for an annual year teaching specialist position (fixed-term). We seek a colleague who embraces the Departments core value of community engagement and who will bring the scholarship of sustainability to bear on critical environmental and natural resource issues challenging communities across Michigan, the United States and the world.
The fixed-term teaching position in the Department of Community Sustainability (CSUS) focuses on teaching and advising in the units undergraduate academic program. Duties include (a) teaching at least four undergraduate course offerings per year; (b) advising undergraduate students; (c) coordinating student internships in the Environmental Studies and Sustainability and Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism major. The expectations for the successful candidate involve teaching as specified in the Code of Teaching Responsibility (http://splife.studentlife.msu.edu/regulations/selected/code-of-teaching-responsibility).

Undergraduate student advising: The successful candidate will join two existing undergraduate advisors who team up to advise students in the Department of Community Sustainability. These students, who number around 400, major in Environmental Studies and Sustainability (ESS), Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education (AFNRE), and Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SPRT).
Internship management: SPRT students are required to complete a professional internship (CSUS 493). ESS students may select a professional internship depending on their career goals. In this course, students relate the professional experiences in their internship to their previous coursework in the Department of Community Sustainability. The successful candidate will help identify student internship opportunities and teach CSUS 493.
This one-year position will begin April 15, 2018 and end on August 15, 2019 and will include benefits. The position may be renewed based on job performance, availability of funding, and college/unit programmatic needs.
Department: The Department of Community Sustainability is a vibrant community of scholars who engage with colleagues, students, stakeholders and communities to address sustainability challenges within specific environmental, economic and cultural contexts. We do this by:
Focusing on community engagement that embraces the decisions inherent in the transition to a more sustainable future;
Creating and supporting a dedicated faculty working on sustainability-related issues;
Incorporating a systems-thinking view of sustainability into curricula at the undergraduate level, graduate level, and lifelong learner level; and
Conducting sustainability scholarship that is international in scope while attending to regional and local contexts.
As scholar-practitioners, and as a multidisciplinary department, we address critical issues at the interface of agriculture, natural resources, recreation, and communities. Through engaged scholarship, we aim to generate knowledge that will be useful to people in their roles as professionals and citizens. This includes their roles as residents and landowners, as well as their positions within businesses, government, and non-profit institutions.
We seek to understand the dynamic interactions in communities, ecosystems, and the world, as well as opportunities for sustainable development. This work is rooted in our view of a just, engaged, and dynamic society. Toward that end, we are guided by an ethic of responsible and responsive scholarship that engages people and communities.
Consistent with its mission to contribute to the development of sustainable communities, the Department offers three undergraduate majors (Bachelor of Science) linked by a common core in community sustainability: (1) Environmental Studies and Sustainability (ESS); (2) Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SPRT); and (3) Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education (AFNRE). The Department offers graduate degrees in Community Sustainability (MS and PhD) and Sustainable Tourism and Protected Areas Management (MS and PhD). In both undergraduate and graduate programs, the Department of Community Sustainability embraces international as well as domestic applications, engagement, and opportunities.

The successful candidate will have evidence of high-quality undergraduate teaching experience in courses similar to those listed above. The successful candidate must have at least a masters degree in a related field; strong verbal and written communication skills; and a strong desire to help students learn and succeed.
