JOB SUMMARY Responsible for planning, implementing and maintaining a nurturing and supportive education program for Head Start children and families. Responsible for daily compliance with Head Start standards within their classroom including education, parent involvement, nutrition, health, etc. Also responsible for home visits, parent-teacher conferences, and implementation of individual education plans.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists teacher with the supervision, hiring and evaluation of program staff working in the classroom, including coordination and supervision of classroom volunteers. Assist in the coordination of center services with the interdisciplinary team other human service professionals toward service coordination. Maintain program records and documents needed for licensing and Head Start program compliance. Inform classroom coordinator of center issues, which may affect program or agency compliance or image. Plan and implement lesson plans in keeping with program performance standards, developmentally appropriate practices, content area plans, and children's interests and skill levels that are conducive to learning. Carry out a daily routine appropriate for the preschool children to insure compliance with all performance standards, licensing standards. Maintain a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the center. Conduct observation, recording and evaluation of individual children for the purpose of planning activities. Develop and implement an individual education plan that identifies strengths, needs, and goals for each child. Establish clear classroom rules and limits for behavior and apply them consistently and calmly. Follow health content area procedures for health and safety and provide health education experiences. Conduct at least two home visits per year. Evening/weekend visits may be required. Conduct two parent-teacher conferences per year. Maintain ongoing communication both formal and informal with parents. Requires regular and prompt attendance. Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS Assists co-workers in preparing and maintaining an orderly classroom environment. Assist in annual program self-assessment. Attends required training's in-service and meetings. Follow procedure for reporting suspected child abuse. Promote and reinforce children's communication skills. Communicate with children at their physical level. Implement nutrition goals during eating times and in nutrition education experiences. Assist in coordination of parental involvement activities in the classroom. Attend parent group meetings if requested. Encourage family participation in the program Works as part of a center team. Performs other duties as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Supervision Received Receives general supervision from the Head Start Teacher.

Education Bachelor's Degree in early childhood education or Bachelor's Degree in related field with current CDA credential or 42 college credits in early childhood education. OR Bachelor's Degree with endorsement to teach at the early childhood level. OR A 2-year college degree in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college or university plus two years experience in a licensed day care/preschool/or Head Start classroom and the ability to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college or university within two years.
Experience Two years experience in a licensed day care/preschool preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registration Current CPR/First Aid certificates or ability to obtain within three months of hire. Valid driver's license and good driving record OR the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Director qualified by the State of Colorado is preferred.
KSA'S AND PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQS:
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A post offer physical examination is required. Knowledge of Social Services rules and regulations for preschool programs. Organizational and time management skills to handle the workload and frequent interruptions. Bilingual Spanish-speaking is a strongly preferred qualification. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Must be 21 years of age. Background check and fingerprints required.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Lifting and Carrying Must be able to lift equipment used in child-care facility and small children aged 3-5 years of age. Must be able to lift coolers and carriers delivered with food service items weighing up to 40 pounds on a daily basis.
Pushing and Pulling Must be able to push or pull playground equipment, i.e., tricycles, wagons, swings, etc. each day. Must push or pull boxes weighing up to 40 pounds into and out of storage once a week. Must be able to move tables and chairs when serving meals and cleaning.
Body Positions Moves about, bends, sits on floor, and stands in activities with young children four to eight hours per day. Transports self to participant's homes on a weekly basis.
Hearing Employee must hear children in the classroom and on the playground or be able to communicate effectively with all children and families in the program.
Vision Employee uses vision to read handwriting and other written communication, including classroom lesson plans and children's individual plans. Must be able to monitor children's activity effectively.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Mathematics Must have basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills for calculating data and teaching young children appropriate skills.
Remembering Must be able to remember children's names and abilities, classroom schedules and details of classroom management. Must be able to remember policies and procedures and apply them in daily work.
Language Ability Must be able to read and comprehend curriculum, Head Start Program Performance Standards, Content Area Work Plans, and implementation strategies.
Reasoning Must make decisions on a day-to-day basis regarding classroom management, supervision of staff, interactions with parents and other professionals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT 80% of work is performed in a classroom environment. Home visits are required. Work includes frequent interruptions. Must be able to manage all Head Start standards. Hours are usually weekday, daytime hours, some evenings or weekends may be required for training, parent meetings, home visits, or special events.
