The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Public Safety is currently recruiting for University Police Officer I (UPO I) positions . UPO I's are commissioned by the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) and have full police authority. They work closely with a non-sworn security force to ensure the safety and protection of the campus. Typically, police officers respond to calls and requests for services via foot patrol, bike patrol, and vehicles. The department has a strong commitment to timely notifications of crime incidents that impact the safety of the campus. The University also sponsors UPO I hires through a Maryland Police Training Academy.
The Department of Public Safety supports the campus mission by controlling, preventing, and reducing crime, conducting crime prevention activities, and maintaining order on campus. The UMB Police Force is a full service law enforcement agency that is comprised of sworn officers, security officers, police communications, and administrative staff. The mission of the force is to deliver quality crime control service that supports UMB's mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good of Maryland and society at-large through education, research, clinical care, and service.

1. Patrols designated areas by vehicle and foot to identify and report safety hazards, detect violations of laws and ordinances, and identify wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions. 2. Responds to calls for assistance and emergency service; takes action as directed. Assists in preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements. Assists in collecting and preserving evidence. 3. Assists in surveillance and in serving warrants and summonses. 4. Assists in apprehending, detaining, and processing violators. Performs searches, detains vehicles and persons, and makes arrest when institutional authority and Maryland State Certification are presents. 5. Interacts with campus community and establishes rapport with public. 6. Operates a variety of communication equipment to obtain, report, and verify information. Prepares and completes a variety of detailed reports and forms to support investigations. 7. Assists in the preparation of cases; appears and testifies in court. 8. Enforces laws, ordinances, and institutional regulations when institutional authority and Maryland State Certification are present. 9. Directs traffic. 10. Operates and utilizes a variety of law enforcement equipment such as firearms, self-defense tools and criminal detection devices.

Education: High School Diploma or GED
* Must be at least 21 years of age * Must be a citizen of the United States * Must have 20/100 (Snellen) vision the weaker eye and vision correctable to 20/30 in each eye and wear corrective lenses * Must not have been convicted of a felony * Must demonstrate physical ability to perform job * Must work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on call, and as needed * Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
Finalists will be required to complete a comprehensive background check, including drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
Applicants who have prior military police experience or a degree in criminal justice and/or with prior security experience in an academic setting are preferred.
Successful candidates must have a stable work history and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Finalists will be subject to a thorough background investigation, including polygraph examination.

Conditions of Employment
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class are required to achieve and maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission and must meet the minimum standards of appointment for Probationary Police Officer as established by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Minimum Starting Salary: $41,420.03
Additional salary consideration will be given to selected candidates with current Maryland Police Training Commissions, prior military police experience, or a degree in criminal justice.
