The Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) Student Union is the financial and support arm of the ASUC Student Government and is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. The Student Environmental Resource Center, also knows as SERC cultivates a collaborative space to strengthen the collective effectiveness of the sustainability community, and provides resources for students to actualize their visions of a more equitable, socially just, and resilient future. The Green Initiative Fund, UC Berkeley’s campus green fund, was recently added to the SERC portfolio, recognizing TGIF and SERC’s shared history of being student-initiated sustainability-focused campus programs, and TGIF’s reputation as a national model for campus green funds.
TGIF provides funding, via grants, for projects that improve and support UC Berkeley's campus sustainability efforts. TGIF allocates funds to projects that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase energy and water efficiency, restore habitat, promote environmental and food justice, and reduce the amount of waste created by UC Berkeley. Reporting to the Director of the Student Environmental Resource Center, the Coordinator position is a part of the Student Environmental Resource Center and has responsibility for The Green Initiative Fund, the Zero Waste Research Center, and assists in providing advising, project management, support for initiatives, policy analysis, and strategic planning for students, staff, and faculty, as it relates to campus sustainability. The TGIF Coordinator position reports to the SERC Director and serves in an advising and project management capacity to TGIF funded projects and UC Berkeley student sustainability organizations and initiatives. This advising role requires a high level of scope and planning around the areas of sustainability. The Coordinator will advise students, staff, and faculty on campus sustainability policies, their sustainability initiatives, events, campaigns, and projects, as well as applying for and accessing campus, local, and national grant funds for their sustainability initiatives. The incumbent will assist the SERC Director with duties related to strategy in sustainability and will be required to: •Assist in the development of proposals and implement recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the ASUC Auxiliary in the areas of Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives. This will be especially critical in the new student union building, where the TGIF Coordinator will assist ASUC Auxiliary staff with programming and education related to the building’s LEED features. •Assist in the preparation and advising of directives, regulations, and other instructions for issuance to campus departments and student organizations regarding campus sustainability best practices. •Research and summarize environmental and Sustainability higher education best practices •Monitor, analyze, report on, and educate internal stake holders and students on external legislation, laws, policies, and requirements in the area of sustainability. •Facilitate training for students, staff, and faculty on these laws, regulations, and practices, especially those mandated by UCOP or the Chancellor. •Manage the new Zero Waste Research Center and guide the student researchers in conducting research.•Experience and knowledge with current sustainability and environmental issues and trends, particularly in the context of higher education and resource management. •Strong ability to develop and implement goals and action plans for areas of responsibility, specifically with new campus sustainability initiatives and projects. •Experience implementing and facilitating trainings, workshops, and events for promoting sustainability and environmental education. •Understanding of campus operational systems, particularly around energy, waste, food, grounds, water, and transportation. •Experience managing a budget and finances. •Experience with project management. •Experience advising students and/or student organizations as well as working with faculty and staff within a collegiate setting. •Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of campus community, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-to-one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts. •Experience in a leadership capacity facilitating campus partnerships and collaborations with other colleagues. •Experience managing multiple assignments and projects successfully in a fast paced, politically charged environment. •Ability to solve problems and mediate effectively with diverse communities. •Analytical/problem-solving skills. Strong skills in analyzing and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals. •Experience assessing existing products and services and identifying opportunities to improve procedures and practices. •Ability to manage and develop content for a website and social media outlets. •Ability to write precise, well-organized emails, letters, and proposals while using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. •Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent years experience This is a 6 month contract with a possibility of extension.
