Colby College invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Libraries. The Director will have an opportunity to connect the libraries, not only with faculty, students, and the community, but also with a new senior leadership team and a uniquely ambitious program of institutional transformation. This endeavor, supported by the largest comprehensive campaign ever undertaken by a liberal arts college ($750 million, with over $380 million already received), seeks to move Colby into the very top group of elite liberal arts colleges. By actualizing a set of core values and creating a distinctive institutional identity strongly focused on student outcomes, Colby seeks to give new meaning to the concept of a liberal arts education. In this context, the Director of Libraries will ensure the centrality of Colby's libraries – its collections, programs, and services – to a Colby education.
Colby College seeks a talented and adept leader, skilled in collaboration, communication, and team building, to consolidate the gains from a recent major library renovation, assess the needs and expectations of faculty, staff, students, and other constituencies, and establish relationships upon which a shared vision for the evolving nature of the Colby College Libraries can be built. The Director will lead a strong and talented library staff of 30, judiciously manage the libraries' resources, including a $5.8 million budget, contribute to and draw from important resources such as the CBB Library consortium (Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin), and create productive partnerships with the town of Waterville and across the State of Maine. The Director will collaborate closely with faculty and administrators to align and integrate all facets of Colby's libraries -- the main Miller Library (including Special Collections), the Science Library, and the Bixler Art and Music Library -- with academic life on campus.
The successful candidate will bring a thorough understanding of the challenges facing academic libraries today, and the expertise to balance support for the libraries' traditional services with the development of new approaches to teaching, learning, scholarship, and the dissemination of knowledge. The candidate will have a record of successful staff development and team-building, excellent communication skills, and the capacity to guide the development and execution of a strategic vision. A track record of commitment to diversity and inclusion, from staff, to services and programs, to collections management, is essential, as is a passion for the mission and goals of an outstanding liberal arts college.
Colby College has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in conducting this important search. Review of applications will begin in December and continue until the position is filled. Confidential inquiries, nominations/referrals, and resumes with cover letters should be sent electronically and in confidence to:
