Essential Job Duties:
As a Research Associate, the primary responsibility is to prioritize exotic plant pests (arthropods and pathogens) according to their potential economic impact if they were to be introduced into the United States. The work will involve performing literature searches, reviewing and interpreting highly technical scientific information and government reports, corresponding with subject matter experts, and analyzing information to produce written reports that will then be presented to a team of analysts. The successful applicant will carry out work supporting cooperative activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the NSF Center for Integrated Pest Management. This work will entail the collection development, evaluation, analysis and communication of biological information.
The position is based at the CPHST Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory (PERAL) on the Centennial Campus of NCSU. On a day-to-day basis, the successful candidate will interact with PERAL risk analysts and CIPM staff.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Use of computer word processing, spreadsheet, citation manager, and other computer-related skills.
Ability to perform extensive literature reviews to acquire the most up-to-date information on plant pests with the ability to develop, evaluate and draw inferences from the data.
Ability to conceptualize and complete analyses that clearly and completely address prescribed objectives.
Ability to develop high quality written analyses that require minimal editing.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet agreed upon deadlines.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience in risk analysis.
