Job Description: The Department of Public Policy and Political Science in the Lokey School of Business and Public Policy at Mills College, Oakland, California, invites applications for a full-time, multi-year adjunct faculty position in Public Policy, to begin in August 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to teach five courses per year at the undergraduate and master's levels, including an introduction to public policy, methods of social science research and policy analysis, and substantive policy courses in two or more domestic or international areas, such as economic development, gender and racial equity, health, housing, human rights, immigration, information technology, local governance, nonprofit management, or social service delivery.
Candidates should have a demonstrated capacity to be excellent teachers, academic advisors, and productive scholars in the liberal arts college context. Candidates must have academic training in public policy analysis (such as a Ph.D. in Public Policy or a related field). A Master of Public Policy degree and/or experience as a policy practitioner in government or the nonprofit sector would be advantageous. Candidates' ongoing research agendas should include work that is policy-relevant as well as scholarly.
The Department of Public Policy and Political Science at Mills College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Adjunct Professor in Public Policy (specialization open). The distinguished Mills College Public Policy Program offers two graduate degrees (MPP, MPP/MBA), and several undergraduate majors and minors, for talented students seeking to lead change and solve the critical policy challenges of our time. Our students gain skills in policy and economic analysis, strategy, implementation, ethical leadership, and political and organizational efficacy, ultimately assuming leadership positions in government, nonprofit organizations, and business upon graduation.
The successful candidate will have substantial teaching experience, a proven track record of mentoring and working with undergraduate and/or master's degree students in public policy or related social sciences, and the demonstrated ability to develop. The Assistant Adjunct Professor will be responsible for teaching 5 courses per year plus advising and departmental service. Teaching may include: an introductory lower-division course, upper-division lectures or seminars in substantive areas of domestic or international public policy related to the instructor's specializations, and graduate-level courses on qualitative or quantitative research methods for students in the Master of Public Policy program and related programs. Other responsibilities will include academic advising for undergraduates and graduate students in public policy and related programs, service on program committees, and other departmental service to be determined.
This is a one academic year renewable contract position to begin in August 2018.
Requirements: Candidates should have:
A Ph.D. in Public Policy or a closely related field
Experience teaching a wide variety of courses in policy issues at the undergraduate and graduate level
Experience teaching social science research methods at the undergraduate and graduate level
Excellent written and oral communication skills
The ability to work with a diverse and dynamic student population
Additional Information: This is full time exempt position. Salary is $60,000 per year, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403(b) retirement plan and 10 paid holidays annually.
