Our Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a Full-time (100%) Medical Laboratory Scientist 2. The Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 (MLS2) will be responsible for providing high level support for the performance of high complexity procedures within the Molecular Microbiology section of the clinical laboratory. The MLS2 provides direction with designated authority to the Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 (MLS1) and participates in the development and evaluation of new procedures. The MLS2 performs administrative duties such as reviewing cases and providing support and assistance to the Molecular Microbiology Lead in overseeing the Quality Assurance, Quality Control, instrument maintenance, procedures, competency assessment, and training and scheduling of MLS1 staff and MLS students. The MLS2 assumes responsibility for a section in the absence of a Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead.
Performs various PCR tests for the identification of bacteria, yeast and parasite in the Molecular Diagnostic Division per laboratory protocols
Rotates and maintains competency in all sections where they have been trained
Conducts DNA extraction by manual methods, sets up PCR reactions, real-time PCR reactions, and DNA sequencing reactions
Understands and operates a variety of molecular laboratory equipment (Qiacube DNA extractor, Qiagility liquid handler, Qiaxcel DNA analyzer, 3130xl DNA sequencer, Illumina DNA sequencer) and is able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting
Corrects and documents errors
Assists with the evaluation of new tests/equipment and research projects
Instructs new employees, medical laboratory students, medical students, residents, and fellows in routine procedures
Assists the lead in teaching/training, organizing, and scheduling in-service of new employees, medical laboratory scientist students, post-doctoral fellows, and residents within the section and provides feedback on performance
Performs inventory in assigned areas; unpacks, labels, monitors, stocks and rotates supply
Assists the lead in ordering supplies
Develops bench assignments for a shift or section
Communicates necessary/appropriate information to all MLS, leads, and the manager
Performs related duties as required

Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience
Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division
Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience
