The Director of Strategic Partnerships is a leadership role within Boys & Girls Clubs that empowers the organization to reach its service goals through successful fundraising strategies in partnership with local and national private foundations and corporate foundations, as well as individual donors. The Director will meet objectives by focusing on the following:
Identifying and approaching private and national foundations, corporate foundations, and individuals for campaign and major gifts, working closely with internal programs and operations staff, Board members and the strategic leadership team to identify opportunities for support. In this position, the Director proactively seeks opportunities to generate proposals based on donors’ interests that will result in funding for the immediate and long-term goals of the Clubs.
Creating the direction and overseeing the development of persuasive, compelling, and concise messaging for use in RFPs, pitch books, reports and stewardship materials.
Developing and stewarding relationships with partners and donors, ensuring true collaboration and creating new opportunities for future support.
Demonstrate and communicate Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee (BGCGM) philosophy, objectives, standards and programs through all methods available to members, their parents, and the general public. Provide quality program activities that are inclusive, welcoming, respectful and responsive to the diversity of members, families and community.
Develops and prepares proposals and grant applications according to funder guidelines; complies with all follow-up grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
Manage the department’s proposal planning, grant applications and reports, and other writing efforts, including collaborating internally on development of program description and budgeting, and writing and submitting grants and proposals on behalf of the organization.
Oversees preparation and submission of high quality funding proposals to private foundations, corporate foundation and individual donors.
Work with the graphic design team to ensure materials’ aesthetics reflect a high level of professionalism consistent with messaging.
Oversees any deliverables from the funder, which might include collaborating with event/communications staff on a check presentation, media event, or social media.
Establishes a program of personal visits with past, current and prospective donors. Advises donors as to the financial options available, projects and needs.
Works with internal team to identify and conduct prospect research on foundations and corporations for potential grant requests of support.
Manages master calendar for all proposal/grant activity, to include submitted proposals and grant requests; maintains current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
Works with the Vice President of Development & Communications to establish annual fundraising and activity goals and assesses projects, reviews strategies and tracks progress.
Under the direction of the VP of Development & Communications, secures philanthropic gifts for capital, programmatic, research, endowment and operating support for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s Club sites and operational and programmatic initiatives.
Shapes and executes strategies for identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting local, regional and national corporate and private foundations
Encourage and support effective board functions, serve as a staff liaison for board of trustees committees as needed.
Human Resource Management
Utilizes assets from different areas of the department from concept to completion of projects, which may require extensive writing, graphic design, marketing and/or event planning.
Financial and Business Management
Research and develop proposals, grant requests, proposal letters, budgets and presentations with the purpose of raising philanthropic support.
Manages high-level portfolio of key stakeholders with giving capacity of $1 million and above. Achieves significant dollar goals and is held responsible for success of campaign, programmatic, endowment and operating support.
Responsible for departmental budget development that supports BGCGM and departmental goals and ensure expenditures are controlled within budget.
Collaboration and Partnerships
Interfaces with Board of Trustees members, prospects and donors in conjunction with external relationship building, proposal development and reporting.
Acquires and maintains sound knowledge of the organization through internal relationships and otherwise, and uses that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants will be sought and to recommend the seeking of grants.
Responsible to ensure all BGCGM administrative policies and processes to include but not limited to Human Resources, Finance, Grants, Development & Marketing are adhered to at the Clubs.
Collaborates with database team on the donor gift acknowledgement process to ensure timely and appropriate recognition of all gifts from donors.
Education and/or Certification Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in English, Journalism, or Communications.
Master’s degree in non-profit Management, business, public administration and management or higher education management may offset some experience.
Skills and Experience:
Minimum of 6 years’ experience in fundraising, with an emphasis on direct major gift solicitation in a campaign environment.
Demonstrated success and experience in private and corporate foundation fund raising strategies for cultivation and direct solicitation.
3 - 5 years of successful writing experience required; additional nonprofit fundraising experience strongly preferred.
Strong leadership skills and ability to manage major gift solicitations and stewardship.
Proven proficiency of professional writing experience including successful proposals to institutional donors, grant writing experience, or other persuasive documents to audiences.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Word; experience working with donor databases; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
Excellent writing, communication, and listening skills with a strong appreciation for an understanding of Boys & Girls Clubs mission.
Entrepreneurial, self-motivated professional with the understanding and knowledge of trends, giving insight into donor motivations.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with individuals contacted during the course of work (e.g. executive, donors, colleagues, program & operations staff, etc.)
Ability to think and act independently and creatively to significantly broaden organization’s relationships with donors and have the professional skills and abilities to work with colleagues across the organization, including executive staff and Board of Trustee members, and to establish and foster relationships that encourage a collaborative team environment.
Proven leader who supports cross-functional engagement and problem solving.
Organizational skills, detailed-oriented and the ability to meet deadlines.
Valid WI driver’s license, good driving record, and meet State required automobile insurance minimums.
