MSC is currently searching for a Medical Physicist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform dosimetry calculations in support of NIH research protocols to assure the safety and efficacy of diagnostic procedures involving radiation. This task requires consultation with researcher, measurement of the fundamental exposures, and calculation of relevant organ doses.
Perform dosimetry for individual patients as requested and when necessary.
Meet directly with patients to address anxieties regarding radiation exposure.
Conceives, develops, designs, implements, and uses existing computer-based (or other) testing procedures for the purpose of ensuring proper operation of clinical imaging equipment. Implements the existing testing program and/or develops new or alternative tests; devises computer programs to aid in the acquisition of the appropriate test data; and creates appropriate software to analyze these data. These procedures will measure all aspects of system performance relevant to clinical imaging and diagnosis (e.g., spatial resolution, contrast resolution, uniformity, sensitivity, linearity).
Oversees quality control testing as it relates to the functioning of the clinical imaging systems, using the established measurements and performing additional measurements or troubleshooting as needed. Maintains accurate, complete, and up-to-date records of all quality control procedures and performs statistical analyses of the results of these measurements. Assures compliance with relevant JCAHO and Federal requirements regarding imaging equipment performance, quality control and radiation safety.
Corrects equipment performance problems revealed through testing of the imaging systems. This includes working closely with the radiologic technologists in understanding the daily problems of the systems as they arise. The incumbent will detect departures from normal operation of the systems and will, either independently or in consultation with the system manufacturer, initiate immediate corrective action to restore normal system operation.
May be asked to conduct or participate in research in the field of medical imaging, radiological electro physics, or electromagnetic radiation effects, as indicated. Works as a team member on Department research projects as well as propose new research projects.
Participate, as requested, in various meetings and activities such as imaging protocol review as required for ACR certification or adherence to Joint Commission standards in CT, Radiography, Fluoroscopy and Interventional Radiology.
Develop the website on radiation dosimetry in partnership with RSC to be used by PIs in writing clinical research protocols.
Must have a graduate degree in physics, or engineering with a strong physics sub-component.
Must be certified as a Diagnostic Medical Physicist by the American Board of Radiology.
Possess ABR certification in Nuclear Medicine Physics.
At least three years clinical experience in medical physics in a diagnostic radiology department.
Individual will work on-site in the CC Radiology Department, on the Bethesda, MD campus.
