The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the nation’s leading trade and lobby association representing the trucking industry, is actively seeking an experienced Accounting / Finance professional to join their staff as the Controller. This position shares responsibility with the CFO to manage and develop financial services, systems, procedures and controls for ATA and affiliated entities to meet business and reporting needs, as well as audit and legal requirements.
The incumbent should be an experienced and detail-oriented finance/accounting professional with a sound knowledge of GAAP. This position directly supervises five accounting functions, including Payroll Accounts Receivable, Government Contracts, General Ledger, Senior Accountant and Systems Administration.
Maintain focus on the detailed accounting practice, while also maintaining a “big picture” view of the accounting function.
Develop controls for new financial processes and assist with creating or updating current procedures.
Maintain a high level of understanding of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable process, including partnering with employees who are responsible for these activities
Manages and audit payroll activities, processes, procedures and oversees the payroll systems.
Oversees general ledger and accounting staff functions to ensure accurate data entry and account reconciliation. Ensures accurate reporting for various clients including audited financial statements for ATA, multiple affiliated entities and pension plans.
Establish processes and procedures to properly document financial activity, provide controls, and meet legal and financial reporting requirements alongside the CFO.
Manages accounting and financial reporting systems, including chart of accounts.
Manages daily cash and investment levels to meet operating needs of the organization. Makes recommendations for moving funds when needed to meet funding requirements.
Manages the audit process to the completion of audited financial statements for ATA’s multiple reporting entities.
Collaborate with the CFO to formulate the annual budget.
Prepare audit and tax related documents in conjunction with the year-end financial statement audit and preparation of the tax return. Respond to questions from the auditors.
Ensure accurate and proper documentation is maintained to substantiate all year-end audit schedules, tax return schedules and the annual budget request.
Prepare designated schedules to assist with preparing the annual tax return.
BS/BA in Accounting or completion of CPA exam required plus 5-7 years’ experience in accounting with payroll, budgeting and financial statement experience; Prior supervisory experience required. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, exceptional interpersonal skills a must. Strong problem solving skills and the ability to see the big picture.
Keen analytical, organization and strong project management skills required. Advanced MS Excel and experience with accounting databases, payroll systems and report writing tools is required. Microsoft Dynamics SL experience is preferred.
