University of Washington Medical Center's Multiple Sclerosis is a UWMC Clinic that is located off site, on the Northwest Hospital Campus and has an outstanding opportunity for a Hourly Medical Assistant to work approximately 20 hours/week. As such our team does not have access to some staffing resources that are available when working in a clinic that is located at UWMC. Exceptional attendance is crucial to success in this position, as we are tightly staffed and covering unanticipated absences is challenging. Additionally, our clinic is multi disciplinary with an emphasis on team care. The successfull employee with be an exceptional team member and skilled at working collaborative with other members of the care team.
I. MANAGES PATIENT FLOW IN A CLINIC
Preparation For Visit:
Prepares paperwork and medical records for clinic visit according to clinic protocol.
Reviews daily schedule to identify visits that may require special preparation, i.e. supplies, equipment, etc.
Opens and prepares exam rooms for patient care assuring that the rooms are clean and organized between patients.
Huddles with patient care team, including providers and nurses, to plan for the day's flow and anticipate problems that may arise.
Accurately obtains and documents patient's chief complaint, height, weight, pain assessment, 25 foot walk and other vital signs, review of systems, etc. in the medical record per clinic protocol.
Properly identifies patients prior to procedures, injections, or collection of specimens.
Obtains information, presents questionnaires, etc., as required per clinic protocols.
Implements clinic guidelines as appropriate for patient condition.
Recognizes symptoms of urgent problems or unstable conditions and reports immediately to RN and / or provider.
Alerts providers to arrival of scheduled patients, completion of requested patient care duties such as specimen collection, records acquisition, as required by clinic guidelines.
Performs procedures, administers tests, etc. as ordered by provider.
Notifies RN of orders that cannot be implemented by MAs.
Informs provider of results of clinic-administered tests.
Records all medications, immunizations, injections, or clinic administered tests performed by the MA in the medical record.
Participates in clinic specific procedures related to test follow-up and patient notification.
Accurately documents patient care in the medical record according to clinic guidelines.
Management of Patient Flow:
Monitors patient flow throughout the clinic to assure efficient clinic operations.
Anticipates arrival of scheduled patients and completes intake tasks promptly.
Monitors schedule for indications of necessary patient care.
Assists other MAs as needed.
Assists clinic and infusion RNs as needed.
Notifies provider, RN staff and / or clinic manager of patients requiring emergency procedures or transfers.
Schedules new and return appointments, consultations and procedures including ancillary appointments or procedures.
Provides patients with appropriate discharge instructions, patient education handouts, referrals and prescriptions as ordered. Documents accordingly.
Follows other clinic specific discharge procedures.
Checks completeness of requisitions and verifies accuracy of demographics.
Obtains completed release of information forms and mails to outside physician's facilities when requested by provider.
Assists in scheduling and coordinating patients' appointments with outside facilities as apporpriate.
II. DELIVERS SAFE & THERAPEUTIC CARE
Procedures Performed by MA:
Accurately measures and documents Orthostatic blood pressure.
Application of medical immobilization or patient protective devices.
Blood glucose finger stick testing.
Cleaning of patient care equipment per clinic guidelines.
Collection of lab specimens including urine, blood, etc.
Assisting providers with medication prescription requests including phoning or faxing prescriptions.
Performs venipuncture, administers immunizations or other injections.
Operates mechanical lift device as necessary to move patients.
Clinic Specific Procedures and patient education performed or assisted by MA.
Completes electronic FOB worksheets in an accurate and timely manner according to clinic policy.
IV. MAINTAINS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT
Clinic Stocking and Maintenance:
Orders medical supplies, forms and clerical supplies as needed (includes stock and non-stock).
Maintains appearance and cleanliness of the patient care areas.
Stocks examination rooms with supplies and education materials, maintaining established PAR levels as specified by clinic protocol.
Promptly removes outdated supplies and medications. Checks regularly for outdates according to clinic protocol.
Requests housekeeping and maintenance services as needed.
Orients new health care providers and staff to the physical setting, equipment and general policies and procedures within the clinic.
Responds to fire and other disasters according to established protocol.
Performs quality assurance activities in the clinic as delegated.
Demonstrates proficiency in use of scheduling and electronic medical record systems.
Covers front desk (answering phones, checking in patients and scheduling appointments) as needed.
Participates actively in clinic staff meetings and assists clinic team in continuous improvement of processes to provide optimal care to our patients.

Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
