JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOBFUNCTIONS:
The Senior General MaintenanceSkilled Crafts Worker/Carpenter directs and performs skilled carpentry work inthe construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of building structures,and facilities following recognized procedures and techniques of the carpentrytrade. The Senior General skilled Crafts Worker/Carpenter also practicespreventive maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment, and complies withfederal state and local regulations governing safety, environmental protection,hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materialscommon to construction.
Performs and directs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair, remodeling and alteration of rooms, offices and facilities according to work orders or verbal instructions.
Uses hand and power tools such as saws, hammers, chisels, levels, drills, sanders, table saws, joiners, planers, and mortising machines to repair doors, windows, window frames, floors, walls, ceilings, partitions, and office furniture; to install drywall or finished hardware such as door locks, hinges, door checks; to install floor coverings; to construct minor buildings or small additions to existing structures.
Requisitions materials and supplies from stockroom and orders from vendors. Works with computer based maintenance software such as Archibus Duties include material requisition, worker time reports and job estimation.
Completes assigned carpentry maintenance and repair tasks with quality workmanship by inspecting the work site to determine the materials, equipment, tool requirements, and method.
Develops a plan or layout for the project or following a blueprint, sketch or schematic; assembling, fabricating or building and installing materials, equipment, or fixtures; provides an estimate of repair or replacement costs beyond the capability to perform, and recommends the use of additional departmental personnel or contract personnel to meet assigned completion targets, as appropriate.
Practices preventive maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment by performing spot checks of equipment to determine working conditions, oiling moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operator's manual, and returning damaged tools and equipment for repair or replacement.
Plans and coordinate scheduling of allied craft workers (e.g.; electricians, plumbers, painters, mechanical workers, etc.) toward successful and timely project completion.
Protects University property and equipment from damage during carpentry repairs by removing furniture, wall fixtures, and equipment from work sites if possible or covering immoveable items with protective cloths, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins as necessary, and erecting safe scaffolding in a manner that prevents damage.
Provides technical assistance in the purchase of new or replacement carpentry shop equipment. Assists with documenting the cost of carpentry repairs by keeping records of time and materials charged to each job, and providing periodic status reports to the Supervisor regarding the status of work projects, material consumed and person-hours utilized.
Reduces the likelihood for liability regarding the University's compliance with federal regulations.
Restores office areas and facilities to original conditions at the completion of work by removing debris, scaffolding, and equipment used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to proper locations, and setting up dismantled equipment.
