The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM), and Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH), as partner institutions in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), are soliciting applications for a dynamic and visionary individual to serve as Senior Vice President and Director of the Clinical Research Division at FHCRC, the Division Head of Medical Oncology in the UWSOM Department of Medicine, and Executive Director and President of the SCCA.FHCRC, the UWSOM, SCH, and the SCCA together comprise one of the 41 established NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and house vibrant research programs in cancer treatment, prevention and basic cancer biology. The FHCRC's Clinical Research Division is internationally recognized for its leadership of the development of bone marrow transplantation in adults and children, as well as for research excellence in cellular- and antibody-based immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies, solid tumors and pediatric cancers; infections and other complications of cancer treatment; biology of hematopoietic and other stem cells; human immunogenetics; and other novel approaches for the understanding and treatment of cancer. The Division also includes members with multi-disciplinary expertise who conduct translational research in a wide variety of solid-tumor malignancies. The UWSOM Division of Medical Oncology bridges the worlds of basic science, translational research, clinical diagnosis, and the treatment of cancer. Clinical investigators in the Division have a strong focus on clinical trials of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including a vibrant Phase I Clinical Trials Program. The division includes strong clinical programs in breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, gynecologic cancer, and other solid tumors. The FHCRC Clinical Research Division and the UW Division of Medical Oncology have a long history of collaboration, with faculty maintaining joint appointments and a joint fellowship training program in Hematology/Oncology. Together they include more than 140 faculty members, more than 70 postdoctoral and clinical fellows and a combined annual operating budget of $124M including more than $70M in sponsored research. Seattle Children's Hospital is a major pediatric clinical and research center that provides care in over 50 pediatric subspecialties. In addition to the main hospital campus in northeast Seattle, Children's operates Seattle Children's Research Institute, which serves as the primary research site for the UW Department of Pediatrics and other pediatric subspecialties; major areas of focus include brain tumor biology, immunotherapy, sarcoma, immunodeficiency disease, hematologic cancers and blood diseases and cancer survivorship.The SCCA is one of the nation's premier cancer treatment centers and a regional market leader, uniting doctors from FHCRC, UWSOM and SCH. The SCCA was incorporated in 1998 as a separate, jointly governed non-profit that includes the cancer treatment programs of the three partners. SCCA's primary outpatient facility is located on the FHCRC campus and houses nationally recognized programs in hematology and hematologic malignancies, including a world-class bone-marrow transplant program as well as multi-disciplinary clinical programs in breast, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, lung/head and neck, melanoma, prostate, and sarcoma; a cancer prevention clinic; and a survivorship program. Clinical services are also provided in other community sites in North Seattle and Kirkland, Washington. The SCCA also operates the only proton therapy center in the Pacific Northwest.As Director of the Clinical Research Division and the Division of Oncology, the candidate will be responsible for additional faculty recruitment, emphasizing emerging directions in hematologic and solid tumor research, while also fostering the broader research portfolio of the cancer center; strategic planning; faculty oversight, appointment and promotion, and mentoring; sound management of financial resources; and overseeing fiscal elements of the clinical practice plan. As Executive Director and President of the SCCA, the candidate will be responsible for managing the SCCA organization and oversight of patient care activities; coordination with FHCRC, UW and SCH; representing the SCCA to public and community organizations; and providing leadership and participating with the SCCA Board of Directors in overseeing the development and maintenance of the SCCA's mission statement, vision statement, and strategic plan.The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence and leadership in any area of clinical oncology research. The successful candidate would hold a full-time faculty appointment at the FHCRC (at the full Member level) in the Clinical Research Division, and a joint full-time faculty appointment at the Full Professor level (0101) with tenure at the University of Washington, Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology, a twelve-month, indefinite appointment.An MD (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in medical oncology and/or hematology (or foreign equivalent) are required. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (Non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
