Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for California Sea Grant with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns. The incumbent will serve as the primary science writer for CASG, producing, posting, publishing and distributing newsletters, project summaries and profiles, and press releases describing, highlighting and promoting the various activities of CASG's extension specialists and funded researchers. The Communications Coordinator will serve as the primary lead for CASG's Communications and will lead the small communication's team. The incumbent will work with the CASG Director and other members of the Management Team (Extension Program Director and Business Manager) to develop and employ communication tools and approaches that reflect program needs and priorities, and that will advance the role of science in effective stewardship and management of the coastal ocean. To accomplish its mission the CASG Communications team produces, publishes and disseminates a range of products that include an annual Program Directory, newsletters, frequent project summaries & profiles, and news releases, and produces and maintains the CASG Communications web pages.
In addition, the Communications Coordinator and staff will assist CASG Management and Administration in fulfilling some of the program's reporting requirements, including overseeing the gathering and entering of annual data about CASG program activities into PIER, the National Sea Grant reporting database. The Communications Coordinator will report to the CASG Director, and serve as a member of the CASG Management Team, and will be responsible for coordinating all formal communications activities of the CASG program, providing communications support to Sea Grant Management and the Extension Program. The incumbent will be responsible for day-to-day administration and implementation of all public relations and communications activities of the Sea Grant program. The incumbent will serve as the primary science writer for CASG, producing, posting, publishing and distributing newsletters, project summaries and profiles, and press releases describing, highlighting and promoting the various activities of CASG's extension specialists and funded researchers.
Will be required to work an occasional non-standard work week, including weekends. Occasional out-of-town travel is required. Confidentiality is a condition of employment due to access to sensitive materials found in proposals.
Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
Strong general knowledge of science, the scientific method and familiarity with marine science.
Ability to read, comprehend and interpret scientific publications and reports and from them write articles, newsletters and project summaries for communication to other technical and educated-lay audiences.
