Background to appointment :
SSGA EMEA's Business Control Function is a controls assurance team focused on mitigating risk from within the first line of defense (FLOD) through control monitoring and improvement.
This role affords you the opportunity to develop a detailed understanding of the processes and controls that underpin a global leader in Investment Management, identify and drive solutions to improve the control environment and effect behavioral change in a complex financial institution.

Take responsibility, and be accountable to management, for appropriately assessing and effectively managing risks associated with the our business activities
Maintain effective risk and control management programs
Self-identify risk and compliance issues, analyse their root causes, implement timely corrective actions, and continuously monitor risk.
Reporting to Charles Lamb, Managing Director, EMEA Head of Business Control Function you will interact with managers from Compliance, Enterprise Risk Management, Legal, Portfolio Management, Trading, Sales and Marketing, Product Management and Investment Operations to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory obligations. The team works in collaboration with equivalent groups in North America and Asia Pacific regions as part of a global FLOD risk excellence program.
You will engage with the various partners to help develop and implement our program. In addition to building the program for compliance with regulatory obligations, you will run a program to maintain our inventory of controls that serve to manage or mitigate compliance and operational risk. The program will be inclusive of recurring controls documentation and risk based testing. You will also develop and prepare management reports for senior management for KRI/KPI as well as reporting program based updates.
The responsibilities :
Utilization of a State Street standard risk and control methodology to assess business risk and ensure that controls effectively and efficiently mitigate risk; you are encouraged to propose methodology enhancement where applicable
Lead a risk based cycle of periodic controls review that monitors the normal execution of critical/key controls across functions and then promptly raises exceptions
Monitor remediation steps and corrective action plans from control review findings to ensure implementation and facilitate solutions, through project management of control enhancements where required by the business
Provide the business with a controls Subject Matter Expert advisory service, adopting a partnership approach, in order to minimize risk and offering solutions to mitigate and bring down the cost of risk
Establish strong relationships with partners including business lines, Office of Controls, Culture and Governance, Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, and Internal Audit. Instill confidence by demonstrating credibility and expertise on control issues
Prepare and / or review reports on control reviews undertaken, controls inventory maintenance and remediation activities to relevant partners
Re-enforce an inherent culture of accountability and ownership for implementation and execution of controls across all levels and functions within the organization
Be flexible and undertake other tasks as required
Maintain the highest level of personal integrity in all your dealings thereby mitigating reputational risk to our business and our customers
You should have the following :
Eight years PQE with solid knowledge of investment processes and instruments, client service requirements and operations. You should preferably have a background in accounting / internal audit / compliance / operational risk / operations / consultancy / business analysis / fund administration
You have an interest in regulatory requirements within the Fund Management Industry i.e. UCITS, Mifid, Basel II etc.
You demonstrate an understanding of control and process mapping methodologies with knowledge of, and interest in, ongoing research and development in control techniques
You have proven experience in writing policies, procedures and reports. You also possess strong user excel / database management skills
With effective communication, negotiating and influencing skills you can guide and influence the controls agenda with the resilience and ability to operate and challenge at senior level
You have demonstrated an ability to lead or work on large global cross-functional projects and act as a change agent
You are customer focused to ensure the team is sensitive at all times to the demands of our partners and our business
