General Summary Possible Multiple Positions/Shifts
The University is seeking candidates with the proper qualifications to fill the position of HVAC Mechanic II on the second shift, Monday through Friday. The University may consider other shifts based on operational needs.
Install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related fixtures; check heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including hot water, steam systems, DDC in a variety of buildings (Academic, Resident Halls, Lab) and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Maintains rebuilds and makes repairs on all related HVAC equipment (PM). Replacing worn or defective parts such as bearings, pulleys, fans and by lubricating motors and bearings, replacing belts, changing filters, switches, fuses, thermostats and electrical wiring. Order supplies and equipment as needed to complete work and assist others in the completion of their work. Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping by using refrigeration, pipe fitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools and work aids to join tubing and/or pipes; to cut and thread pipes; to solder or braze joints; to mount compressor and condenser units; and to connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulation ventilation fans to electrical power sources. Checks equipment for malfunctions by various means. Adds necessary refrigerants keeping accurate records following the current rules and regulations issued by the EPA. Installs, repairs or alters internal and external piping systems such as chilled/hot water systems, low-thru-high-pressure heating systems, etc. and maintains or replaces related equipment such as trap valves, heat exchangers and steam piping and fluid transmission lines as required and in accordance with standard procedures Exercise direct supervisory responsibilities as determined by the University such as planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews; determining subordinates' training needs and recommending such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action. Analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems such as heating and cooling loops, steam boilers and cooling towers by adding algaecides, biocides and inhibitors. Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; drilling holes for mounting bracket; screwing, boring riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches, and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets of systems Performs rigging of motors, fans and pumps for weights < 2000lbs Assist Project Management and outside contractors on both small and large projects with locating piping, ductwork, and electrical circuits as well as providing other assistance as needed. Minimum Qualifications -Current Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License -Applicants must have applicable experience of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, as an HVAC Technician with at least 10 of those years as a Refrigeration Technician licensee
-Knowledge of the standard preventative maintenance procedures for heating ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning systems -Ability to successfully supervise, including planning and assigning work Knowledge of the methods for lubricating machinery and equipment -Knowledge and skill in the uses of small hand and power tools -Knowledge of the safety practices and procedure followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems -Knowledge of the terminology, coding symbols and standard abbreviations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems -Knowledge of the methods and techniques followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air conditioning, steam and related electrical systems -Knowledge of the methods and techniques of pipes threading and soldering -Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air conditioning, steam and related electrical systems -Skill in the use of electrical testing equipment -Skill in operating heating, refrigeration, ventilating, and air conditioning machinery and related equipment -Knowledge of electrical, electronic (DDC) and pneumatic HVAC control systems -Knowledge of the use electrical test equipment such as voltmeters amp probe, etc. -Knowledge of the laws, regulations and codes governing the safe and environmentally correct operation and repair of building systems -Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, and standards and guidelines governing HVAC activities -Ability to read and interpret documents such as specifications, operation manuals and blueprints -Ability to follow oral and written instructions The ability to work effectively with diverse groups -Mechanics aptitude and dexterity -Knowledge of basic computer skills including the ability to order supplies and equipment as needed to complete work and assist others in the completion of their work OPERATIONAL NEEDS: -Demonstrated willingness to be on essential personnel list for facility related emergencies and University Closings due to weather and other emergencies -Possess a current and valid driver's license -EPA Reclaim License
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: -Ability to operate air and hydraulic lifts -Similar institution experience -Knowledge of a variety of low voltage systems such as HVAC controls -Ability to operate Energy Management Systems
