Mission and Vision
Dedicated to Art for All, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts is the community’s arts center, providing lifelong, accessible engagement in the arts. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts will be Maryland’s leading arts campus, actively engaging the community in innovative, creative endeavors in arts education and the performing and visual arts.
In 1979, Maryland Hall was founded by a group of artistic visionaries and community leaders who believed the former Annapolis High School could best be re-used as a multi-disciplinary arts center. Today, our historic landmark building is the community’s gathering place for the arts. It is located in Maryland’s vibrant capital city of Annapolis on a beautiful campus that includes Wiley H. Bates Middle School, an integrated arts and performing and visual arts public magnet school of 900 students. Through year-round classes, performances, exhibits, tours, workshops and demonstrations people of all ages discover the transformative power of the arts.
Maryland Hall has many Arts-Related Programs, including Arts Education, Outreach, Visual Arts, Performance Arts, Resident Companies, Artists-in-Residence, Community Partners Program and Peabody Preparatory. Today, Maryland Hall presents more than 700 classes each year for all ages: supports or presents more than 60 performances in our theatre; serves nearly a thousand at-risk students through ArtReach workshops; and showcases the work of hundreds of emerging and professional artists through year round exhibits.
Our newly-renovated theater is one of the largest venues in Anne Arundel County. For audiences of all ages, we host a diverse range of performers– from rock, pop, jazz, dance, ethnic and theatrical performances – on our stage each year. Outreach activities engage underserved students and local families to make the arts accessible, available and affordable to everyone. This year we have started a “Film and New Media” program.
Maryland Hall is also the home to four highly-regarded Resident Companies: Annapolis Symphony Orchestra; Annapolis Opera; Annapolis Chorale; and The Ballet Theatre of Maryland. Studio space for Artists-in-Residence is available for long-term and short-term residencies as well. Maryland Hall offers artistic programming to the community through our Community Partners Program. Finally, the facility has served as the Annapolis branch of the Peabody Preparatory, a division of Johns Hopkins University, since 1982. Peabody offers music instruction at Maryland Hall to children and adults year-round.
We bring 20,000 local students to the theater on class trips each year. Nearly 2,000 members of the community support the arts as members of Maryland Hall, volunteers donate more than 5,000 hours of service each year, and approximately 100,000 people visit Maryland Hall each year. Maryland Hall contributes significantly to the region's vibrancy, quality of life, and economy. As our region’s community arts center, Maryland Hall reinforces the reputation of Annapolis as an arts and cultural destination in the state. Maryland Hall is governed by a 30-member volunteer board of directors. The organization’s $2.7 million operating budget is supported through revenue generated from our arts-related programs, special events, ticket fees and through generous donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies.
Maryland Hall is mid-way through a multi-year Capital Campaign to raise $18 million to modernize and expand the facility.
Maryland Hall President and CEO Linnell Bowen, has announced her retirement from Maryland Hall effective June 30, 2017 after serving as its leader for 21 years.
The President and CEO reports to the board of directors and is responsible for Maryland Hall’s overall management and consistent achievement of its mission, strategic goals, and financial objectives. The President and CEO is the chief fundraiser and relationship manager for the organization. The appropriate candidate for the position will demonstrate strong nonprofit management experience, relationship building and strategic leadership skills. S/he will be a visionary leader with a proven track record of developing, implementing and assessing strategy in a collaborative environment.
The new President and CEO will lead the organization into its next stage of growth and development through initiating, nurturing, and maintaining relationships with community members, stakeholders, donors, local businesses and government, as well as with board members and staff.
The new President and CEO’s key responsibilities:
Provide visionary and strategic leadership that advances the mission;
Lead and manage the financial and administrative functions and supervisory functions to ensure a fiscally sound and well-managed organization;
Provide fundraising and resource development leadership for the organization, including evaluating current and potential business and financial models to identify opportunities to increase, maximize and diversify funding streams, as well as stabilize and grow the organization;
Successfully complete the Capital Campaign while integrating it with annual fund raising activities;
Foster an Art-for-All environment internally and externally;
Collaboratively manage the staff team and assist staff in implementing strategic objectives and meeting goals;
Believes in a culture of continuous career development and improvement for themselves, the team and the organization;
Develop and maintain professional community-wide relationships and serve as a spokesperson for the organization;
Expanding our innovative technology-rich arts experience and opportunities for patrons of all ages;
Support the board of directors in its governance role, and foster its ongoing development; and
Provide the leadership to continue renovating the building’s physical plant, plan for a long range maintenance program and bring the newly constructed space on line as it is completed.
Ideal candidates for this position will have a genuine passion for and commitment to Maryland Hall and the role of art and understand the value of the practicing artist in society. The ideal candidate will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to Maryland Hall including:
An inspirational leadership style with a sense of humor, collegial manner, and a successful track record of creating a collaborative environment;
Ten years of leadership and management experience, preferably in a nonprofit and/or arts organization, including oversight of a comparably sized budget and staff;
Business acumen and experience with administrative and fiscal management to help Maryland Hall continue to grow and improve;
A successful track record in raising funds including state and local government funding, earned income, grants and philanthropic support, and the ability to identify new revenue opportunities;
Knowledge of and/or appreciation for the arts in the fullest sense;
An ability to connect with the community and a knowledge of how to partner strategically with individuals or organizations for the continued success and growth of Maryland Hall;
Exceptional interpersonal and networking skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to interact with diverse audiences with an executive presence and political savviness;
Devoted to continuous learning with a desire to foster a culture of continuous career development as the approach to managing a diverse staff of 14 people;
Strategic and visionary thinking;
A high level of initiative, creativity, and an ability to produce results and implement change;
Experience working with or for a board of directors with diversified skills and professional interests;
Understand what it requires to renovate a building and build and maintain additional space;
A strong understanding of and commitment to diversity;
Proficiency in use of communications and office management software applications; and
Master’s Degree preferred.
Leadership Outlook and Near-Term Priorities
In addition to quickly understanding the mission, business model, and approach of Maryland Hall as well as learning and understanding the dynamics of the community, the near-term priorities for the first 12-18 months of the new President and CEO’s tenure include (not in priority order):
Developing trust and working relationships with diverse constituencies including funders, board members, staff and resident companies;
Learning and understanding current programs and the needs of the constituencies;
Evaluating and expanding or refining the current business and financial model;
Identifying possibilities to increase revenue streams as well as stabilizing and growing the organization;
Overseeing the Capital Campaign and integrating it with day to day fundraising activities;
Understanding both the education and performance sides of the arts and the business underpinnings that support both;
Further developing a partnership with the local Anne Arundel County Public Schools system;
Evaluating and improving organizational management, governance and the efficiency of internal systems;
Completing and implementing the Maryland Hall Business Plan; and
Overseeing the new building and the plans to bring this new space on line.
