Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected. The Cal Poly Packaging Program has developed a national reputation as a significant source of packaging research and education. An increasing number of companies support packaging related research and development projects at Cal Poly, resulting in a growing portfolio of larger research projects funded by government and other third-party organizations. The Cal Poly Packaging Program, by most assessments, is considered among the top five university-based programs in the United States in Packaging Science and Technology. Located at the Orfalea College of Business, the program is offered as a Major (emphasis area in Industrial Technology), a Concentration (Consumer Packaging Solutions) and a Minor. The program is also currently developing a MS in Packaging Value Chain (PVC) degree (and certificates) aimed at professionals with a targeted launch date of Fall 2017.
The Administrative Director of the Cal Poly Packaging Center will provide overall leadership and strategic management for direction, coordination and oversight of the new "Packaging Value Chain Center" (PVCC). Reporting to the Dean of Orfalea College of Business and working closely with the VP for Research & Economic Development at Cal Poly, the Director will build a dynamic and results-oriented, one-of-a-kind Center that crosses industry and academic boundaries in California, and beyond.
The following are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:
Develop robust portfolio of Packing Value Chain Center-supported research projects by coordinating selection and launch based on recommendations of the Center's Executive Committee (EC) and Advisory Board (AB) in order to establish the Center as a leader in collaborative research-based projects addressing real-world issues.
Represent the Packaging Value Chain Center to University leadership and external industry partners through the EC and AB as well as other mechanisms.
Lead and manage the development and implementation of the Packing Value Chain Center's research strategy, performance indicators, and targets and ensure those are in alignment with the College and University's strategies.
Promotion and communication of the research and technology strategies of the Packaging Value Chain Center to internal and external stakeholders.
Developing networks between the Packing Value Chain Center and researchers in the public and private sectors at the local, national and international level.
Recruit new members for the Packaging Value Chain Center's activities, including current and future research consortium members.
Develop and implementation of new procedures and policy with regard to operation of the Packing Value Chain Center.
Lead and manage the outreach and executive education activities.
Development of annual reports and presentation of information to leadership that is supportive of the mission of the Packaging Value Chain Center.
Manage the space needs of the Packaging Value Chain Center in coordination with appropriate university departments.
Development and implementation of a sustainable program to attract research funding and donations for the Packaging Value Chain Center.
The raising of capital and operating funds for research conducted by the Packaging Value Chain Center, including coordination with the Alumni and Development Department's fundraising initiatives
As part of outreach efforts transferring knowledge to internal and external stakeholders through various methods (e.g. collaborative research; seminars; workshops; lectures; websites; publications) and, where applicable, through technology transfer (e.g. collaborative research; contract work; and commercialization of intellectual property).
Promote the "Cal Poly Packaging" brand at various forums such as Trade Shows, Industry Conferences and related events.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Packaging Science and Engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
A minimum of 10 years of work experience in Consumer Packaged Goods
A minimum of 5 years in leading development programs in a global setting.
Strong industry liaison experience with the packaging value chain stakeholders.
Experience in managing short, medium, and long-term research projects of varying complexity.
Demonstrated administrative and budget management abilities.
Strong commitment to excellence in serving students, faculty, and external stakeholders.
Ability to develop external financial resources to support research programs and proven ability to secure significant project funding.
Strong leadership, and effective personnel management and influencing skills.
Demonstrated experience in effective management principles and possessing the ability to apply the principles and practices of effective supervision and employee safety.
Ability to accomplish outcomes in a complex environment.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing. Ability to articulate ideas and make effective presentations at high-level interpersonal situations, groups and large audience forums
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
MS/MBA or PhD preferred.
Direct experience in supply chain management and packaging

Must be willing to travel (local, domestic, or international) and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
