The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is seeking to add an experienced Senior Vice President of Access, Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) to our team of high-performing professionals.
In this position, you will lead, manage and support our ADI staff in carrying out the objectives of your ADI portfolio. You will work under the supervision of the Chief Policy Officer to develop strategies to guide and support the efforts of dental education programs to increase the diversity and cultural competency of administrators, faculty and students, and promote an institutional climate that supports effective learning and advancement for all members of the community and promote student, resident and fellow engagement in ADEA activities. You will be responsible for development and implementation of diversity-oriented programs and practices and coordination of the ADI staff. Working independently and also collectively with members of the ADEA Leadership Team, you will pursue external funding to advance ADI programs and projects. You will also serve as a liaison to assigned internal and external committees and you will represent ADEA to external organizations as approved by the President and CEO.
Lead ADEA initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in academic institutions and oral health professions.
Guide and support the efforts of dental education programs to increase diversity and the cultural competency of their students.
Lead the ADI staff in successfully carrying out the strategic priorities of the ADEA Office of Policy, Research, and Diversity.
Lead and collaborate with others in the writing of issue briefs, policy studies, Association Reports, and related reports for various ADEA publications.
Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field related to the various components of diversity and inclusion.
Provide content expertise for advocacy, research and institutional matters concerning diversity.
Develop the ADI budget in alignment with ADEA strategic directions and provide budget oversight, monitoring and reporting.
Promote programs and resources to engage students in ADEA activities and to support ADEA Chapters for Students, Residents, and Fellows and other programs focused on increasing interest in academic careers.
Work collaboratively with the ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Committee in the development of projects and resources for the education community.
Promote the use of ADEA resources to help meet the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards related to diversity.
Develop resources for academic dental institutions seeking to implement cultural competency in the curriculum including: relevant literature, training opportunities, content expertise in curriculum design and assessment.
Foster leadership programs and opportunities for leaders from diverse backgrounds (e.g., women, racial/ethnic minorities, LGBT community members).
Establish effective partnerships with community members, organizations, and other entities
Lead the effort on behalf of the team to secure additional grant funding to develop innovative new programs.
Desired First Year Outcomes
Assess current ADI activities and programs and develop a 3-year strategic plan aligned with ADEA Strategic Directions and values and that capitalizes on the varied ways diversity and inclusion can be embedded in ADEA member universities’ curricula, infrastructure, policies, and programs. Annual goals will be developed after approval of the strategic plan.
Graduate degree in public policy, educational policy, public health or a health profession required.
A minimum of 10 years of experience in government, a research organization, or a university.
Must have held a leadership role directly related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
Substantial supervisory experience, including a minimum of 3 years of direct supervision.
Experience in an academic related institution preferred.
Ability to research, identify & implement best practices of diversity & inclusion, as well as demonstrating an excellent command of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion & multi-culturalism concepts, and issues.
A proven record of accomplishment in the creation, delivery and management of organization wide diversity and inclusion, equity and cultural competency training programs and resources.
Demonstrated knowledge of current and historical issues of access, diversity, and inclusion in institutions of higher education and health care environments.
Team-oriented individual with the ability to lead, motivate and coach a high-performing team and to work collaboratively and effectively.
Proven ability to establish effective partnerships with community members, organizations, and other entities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experienced in using social media communications.
Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
Extensive overnight travel required.
