The mission of the Brotherhood Initiative (BI) at the University of Washington-Seattle is to empower men of color undergraduates to thrive on campus and graduate prepared for a lifetime of leadership, service, and success. The BI is a collaborative partnership among the College of Education, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, Division of Student Life, Enrollment Management, and the Graduate School. Guided by a steering committee of UW staff, faculty, and students, the BI will achieve its mission by utilizing research-based strategies to provide multiple pathways for males of color in college to engage in academic, civic, and leadership opportunities, and also access networks and resources that will advance their success and through this process, develop a learning community of scholars. The primary goals of the BI are to: 1) Increase enrollment, persistence, and graduation rates for males of color by developing a cohort- based support system that will holistically promote the academic, personal, and leadership development of male students of color at the University of Washington; 2) Conduct interdisciplinary research about factors that promote the success of young men of color, in order to contribute to the literature and research available on the experience of underrepresented men of color within higher education, and 3) Inform policy and practice in working with males of color across a range of educational institutions, community organizations, and government agencies.
Reporting to the Faculty Director, the Student Services Specialist will provide direct support to BI students and will work collaboratively with the Director and BI research team to manage and implement the programmatic and academic support components of the BI. In addition, and in collaboration with the Director, the Student Services Specialist will provide support for the development, administration, and implementation of the courses that are part of the BI curriculum, design and implement programming and events for BI students, and lead the recruitment and selection process for prospective BI participants.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Student Services Specialist will provide academic and co-curricular support to BI students, and form collaborative relationships with other student services offices across campus in order to direct students to the resources most appropriate for their interests and needs. In collaboration with BI seminar instructors, the Student Services Specialist will also create and implement academic and co-curricular programs and activities to support the primary goals and outcomes of the BI, including but not limited to academic skills development, leadership development, career development, community engagement, and mentoring. The Student Services Specialist will ensure that these programs and activities are aligned with the BI seminar curriculum for each cohort level. The Student Services Specialist will also manage the recruitment and selection process for incoming BI cohorts each year, which will include communicating with prospective applicants, working with BI staff to identify a selection committee, organizing applications for review, setting up the interview process, and selecting and confirming participants.
Academic Support and Student Development
Serve as academic support specialist and advocate for BI students.
Work closely with EOP advisors to ensure that students are academically on-track, and to provide additional support when needed.
Provide referrals to resources on campus and within the community.
Work with BI course instructors to track student academic progress each quarter.
Work with BI course instructors to advise and prepare students for engagement in experiential learning, internships on and off campus, service learning, study abroad, and other academic opportunities.
Work with BI staff to establish and maintain partnerships with other campus offices (i.e. OMAD, UAA, academic departments) to facilitate collaborative student support and connect students with academic and co-curricular opportunities.
Promote campus and community events, and resources of interest.
Management of BI Programming
In coordination with Director, manage the daily operations of the BI.
Manage event planning and coordination for BI events, including welcome reception, fall retreat, health and wellness workshops, end-of-year celebration, and other community-building programs.
Manage peer mentor and staff mentor programs.
In conjunction with BI staff, develop communications with faculty, students, staff, and outside organizations and colleges to disseminate program information, build partnerships, and enhance opportunities for BI students.
Manage course schedule planning.
Establish and maintain new and existing outreach efforts and vehicles, including ongoing maintenance and updating of BI presence on program website and social media accounts; ensure efforts align with program goals and propose revisions to outreach strategies as appropriate.
As requested by the Director, represent BI to external organizations and constituents.
Cohort Recruitment & Selection
Work collaboratively with BI staff and other campus partners (OMAD, Enrollment Management) to participate in recruitment activities.
Advise and counsel in person, by phone, letter, and Email communication with prospective students throughout the recruitment & selection process, with a high degree of program knowledge and professionalism.
Proactively develop and execute multiple outreach channels including social media, networking events, and outreach with schools and community partners.
In conjunction with the Director, manage application review and interview process including working with the selection committee to read applications, schedule and conduct interviews, and select participants.
Develop and manage confidential student records.
Bachelor's Degree in education or a related field and 2-3 years of experience in education and/or program administration.
A demonstrated awareness and understanding of concerns and issues experienced by underrepresented and marginalized populations.
Direct experience working with students in an educational setting.
Demonstrated ability to serve as an effective advocate for student success.
Excellent communication skills and ability to prioritize and reprioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Informed judgment and maintenance of a high level of confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and follow through on independent projects.
Master's Degree in education or a related field. Familiarity with issues of educational equity, college persistence, gender and masculinity. Prior experience in advising, programming and/or recruitment with ethnically diverse, low-income, and/or first-generation college student populations.
